Exclamation 4-Wheel drive messing up needing help ASAP

Hey guys, today it snowed and we got around 6ins so I decided to go out and play in it with my '99 TJ. Not to long into it I decided to switch it into 4-Wheel drive after driving for a bit in it, it seemed to slip out of 4-wheel drive. When I went to go put it back into 4-wheel drive it was still in the 4-wheel drive position but the light wasn't on the dashboard and I could tell it wasn't in 4-wheel drive. I decided to try to put it into 2-wheel drive and as I tried doing this it made a very loud screeching noise and wouldn't lock into the 2-wheel drive slot. So I went to put it into Park, which also made a very loud screeching noise until I slammed into Park then it stopped. I also went a head a slammed the 4-wheel drive into 2-wheel which stopped the streaching and it locked in. Apon putting it into the 2WD position the 4-wheel drive light popped up, so I put it in Drive and it wouldn't go it acted like it was in Neutural. So I switched it back into the 4WD position and it started driving, but it was only in 2WD. My question is, what is going on? I personally have no idea. Maybe transmission? Transfer case?

This might have been really confusing and I'm sorry about that this is the best I know how to explain it. I could also use all the help I could get.

Have you checked the linkage that connects the 4WD shifter to the transfer case?

Man. I'm seeing a bunch of linkage threads all over the place today. It is snowing everywhere but here and that sucks.

The linkage is out of wack it sounds like it went into neutral. My jeep does the same noise if I switch into neutral(transfer case) before putting the trans in neutral. Best way to see is shift into 4lo which should make the handle go all the way back. If the handle wont go all the way back but the 4wd light is on and you drive it and its just crawling then just loosen the ajustment bolt pull the handle the rest of the way back. Retighten bolt then try shifting back into 2wd. That should take care of it.
