Talking 4WD doesn't work??

Alright ,you guys were awesome with my first question on my new jeep(new to me).Next step is the 4wd,when you pull it into 2h or 2l then put it in first and try to let out on clutch ,the rear wheels engage but the front doesn't it makes a really bad grinding noise .Sounds kinda like the first time I learned to drive a stick(sans my dads laughter).
Should I be looking at the front end or the transfer case ?

By the way we took our first beach trip yesterday in the jeep, took some really cool shots with the jeep overlooking mosquito lagoon with the shuttle launch pads in the distance. Lot's O fun.

I'd look at the linkage going between the handle and the tcase lever. Probably needs a small adjustment to get it proper. I like to stick the tcase in 4wd manually and adjust the handle and tighten the adjuster bolt. It is 13mm.

Odds are that, as suggested above, the transfer case shifter linkage has simply slipped out of adjustment. A bolt on the linkage is supposed to hold it in adjustment but if the bolt isn't tight enough, the linkage can slip out of adjustment so it won't pull the transfer case all the way into gear.

Here's a pic of the linkage from underneath with that bolt circled in red. It's difficult to get to without dropping the skidplate. Be sure to remove those four little 1/2" nuts in the center of the skidplate that go to the transmission mount before removing the six big bolts that hold it to the frame. Support the transmission with a jack or jack stand in front of the skidplate before dropping the skidplate.

Loosening that bolt so you can pull the linkage back into adjustment is the thing to do, it's not hard to do. Tighten the snot out of that bolt once you get the linkage back into adjustment.

Also if you have a body lift the linkage may be bound up, by looking at Jerry's picture you can see how the linkage mounts to the body as well as the transfer case.
