4wd question, First off road trip.

Hey guys,

Ok i have had my jeep for a year and a half now and i figured it was about time to go ahead and get here nice and muddy and take her off road, and may i say i had an awesome time me and a buddy packed up some gear/Shovals/Rope exc. and headed out on a 2 hour quest to find this trail we found on Googles sat view, long story short we found the trail and it had just rained so it was nice and muddy so there was this one spot that was really deep so we thought what the heck lets go for it and well we barely made it the first time, it was about a foot deep of soft mud and us having no winch were kinda worried but we had to get back because it was getting dark, well just our luck we got stuck. After 30 min of digging out thank God for shovals and biceps we got free but one thing i realized while out there was it felt like i dident have much power so my question is when i go trailing again next time should i be in 4wd hi or low?

I would say 4wd hi for mudding and keep up your momentum when returning through a nasty Jeep eating mud hole. More aggressive tread would also help you. Your Jeep looks good covered in mud.

I do most in 4 lo- really depends on who your are. You will get a feel for it. I bet you could of rocked out of it tho!! try 4 lo get the tires spinning then never let them stop going first gear then reverse if in a auto I don't recommend that at all.

ok cool thanx guys yea ima experiment with both but yea i hit it with speed and tried to keep straight couldent get traction and just turned her to much and viola stuck haha but my tires come in 2 weeks from now im getting a 1" body lift and some 32" firestone destination M/T's

If you like the transmission you have, I don't think I'd recommend it at all...lol

4lo is sometimes good for those situations where you're stuck just enough...I don't know the exact way it works, but it lowers your gearing so your tires spin slower at higher RPMs. Sometimes when you're stuck and you get on the gas, your tires try to spin too fast causing them to lose traction and break free...if you throw it in 4lo, they'll spin slower with more torque and might have better luck maintaining traction and slowly pull you out. I usually would use it when driving in really deep snow (over a foot deep) with our old work truck.

I have a manual first to reverse back to first does just fine when spinning in mud. Never had a problem with it. My tranny works just fine too. I would not be doing that on anything that I actually get grip in tho. I also would do it in sand if it happens there too.

Just be careful when youre spinning in mud and in 4hi or 4lo, you might end up breaking an axle shaft or breaking something else. Best way to avoid that is to get new axles or make it a super.

Ok Awesome thanks guys. Wow yea i dident even think about that so my question is if i replace my tires with bigger ones and get the 1" body lift is it going to put more pressure on the stock axle shaft?

the body lift isnt going to put more stress, but the bigger tires sure are.

if you go up to 33" tires and want to wheel id upgrade past a D35, either a super or D44/Ford 8.8/Ford 9. Dont know how far Louisiana is from Missouri but I know a guy who would build you a D44 axle for cheap, way cheaper than you could get it anywhere else.

Unless youre really running a rubicon you most likely have a D35 in the rear.

oh ok cool yeah im not running a rubicon thats just the hood i put on there. but yea Missouri is quite a drive here from New Orleans.

Well check craigslist all those ads, there will be someone somewhere who will be selling D44, D60, Ford9, or find someone near you who can help you assemble all those parts and can weld.

You can go ahead and wheel with 33" tires on D35 just be careful since alot of people have broken their axles that way, then if this jeep is your DD, youre out a jeep and youre going to have to order a new axle shaft or something (easy to replace).

It will fit with a ton of work time and money... wheel bolt pattern is different, is setup for leaf springs, so welding new tj brackets, depending on the year might also have the diff off center..

I would say keep the 35 for now, as long as you don't put a locker in it, it will run larger tires okay, just don't drive it like you stole it.

Well if you got it for $75 and you know someone who can weld and change it for a TJ then it should only cost you around $500-600? (total random guess) but youd also need to regear the front to match your rear and since the wagoneer doenst come with arb air lockers like D44 out of rubicon would, those lockers themselves would cost $700.

but you can get stuff used and end up saving money over buying a Rubicon axle off someone else which I think averages $1200

You are probably going to run into width issues. What year Wagon? How many miles on it? $75 for a d44 is phenomenal, damn. You are going to want to stay around the 60.5" mark, just a heads up. If your getting prices like that for the 44 try to look for a 8.8 off a Exploder. You might find something cheaper than $75. And if you do pm me I might be interested. Wonder what shipping costs would be from NO to Frankfort, KY?....

Its an 89 Wagoneer and had 192,000 miles on it, it went to scrap because it was in a front end collision , but yea thats what i thought i was like wow 75 bux, but yea ima call the dude tmr to see if he has one of those, but yea as far as costs for shipping haha i have no idea lol.

3K pound winch wont pull u out if u are really stuck. 7.5K is lowest I would recommend. 3K will be better than nothing but dont think that u will be able to get out of anything.

Well i figured 3000 pounds compared to nothing last weekend would help plus it was only 55 bux so its a win win lol but i do agree i will eventually get a bigger one but for right now im not really doing any mud more that a foot/foot and a half deep.
