5 Speed Center Console Removal & Engine Starting Issue

2 questions...hopefully I can get some quick answers so I can go work on my Jeep this afternoon

First... I got my handle throttle kit for my Jeep. The directions seem pretty clear but it says to run the cable from the throttle lever on my shifter down my shift boot and then out the bottom (front) of my center console. I'm assuming that cable is NOT going to just bend and push its way out the front of the console if I shove it down through the boot. I know where the screws are holding the center console down, but my shift boot appears to be a solid piece with the center console. Is there a way to pop the boot off the console that I'm not seeing? I don't wanna break anything.

Plus one day I'll be removing the console to herculine my tub...so I'd like to know how to do it by then. lol

Second... recently my Jeep has been running kinda weird. Not getting any engine codes, but it idles kinda rough especially after I've been driving it a bit. Like when I'm at a red light, it'll idle rough around 500 RPMs like it feels like it's almost trying to stall out. It usually does this only after it's been sitting idling for a few moments.

Also, the other day I started it up...and it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders...like it was missing horribly. I shut it off and restarted it and all was normal. Then later that day I went to start it and it cranked a lot longer before it caught. Same thing happened again yesterday... I went inside to eat and I had to crank it twice before it fired up. Normally, I turn the key and it fires right up. Any ideas on the culprit?

i took a screw driver to pry it out a little....and then broke it, lol

There's a plastic retainer piece you slip the boot over, then it snaps into the console. It's called a "bezel". Mine was missing when I bought the jeep so the boot was just kind of floating around, not snapped into the console. The part was about 20 bucks at the dealer. If you are careful you could probable remove it with a screwdriver without breaking it. Try slipping the screwdriver between the boot and the rear of the console and pry up. It's just a thin rectanguler piece of plastic so it may break. Worst case scenario you're out $20 for a new one. Good luck

If you haven't tried it yet I'm thinking one screwdriver on the side and one on the end might help, pry up at the same time.

Okay, the bezel piece your talking about looks like #11 here and they break like Benedict Arnold



The way I get mine out is to actually use my fingers and pinch in between the two long sides and pull up. Don't flex it too much or else you'll be out $17 for a new one

Update:

I got my hand throttle installed. General review...it works, does what it was designed to do, but the instructions kinda sucked and it gave you a bunch of hardware and didn't really explain what it was used for. ie. I ended up making it work the way I needed it to, but I had some "spare parts".

I figured by spending the extra few bucks for the Teraflex kit over the Rubicon Express kit, maybe I'd get better instructions and higher quality parts. I don't think I did. Regardless, it's functional.

A word of caution for those who decide to do this... when people say, "Oh yeah...removing your shifter knob is cake. Simply pop a small screwdriver around the edges of the "plate" on top with the gear pattern on and gently pop it off, revealing a nut..." there's NOTHING gentle about it. You're going to tear up your shift knob. I used the smallest screwdriver I could find which was TINY so I could get it into the virtually nonexistent gap without tearing up the plastic. I pried and pried and all it did was shred my shifter knob. I then went to a larger screwdriver and the little plate finally begun to move some...but I was totally destroying my knob. It's now pretty much ruined...but I finally got the damn thing out after prying with a large screw driver for about 25 minutes. Basically, what that little plate is... it's considerably wider than the plastic on the shifter knob (which is slightly flexible) and is essentially like trying to stuff a baseball through the opening in a 2 liter bottle.

When I reinstalled it after filing all the sharp edges down the best I could...I had to take the damn thing to a grinding wheel to shrink the diameter so it would fit back in there because once again, it was like pushing a baseball through the opening in a 2 liter bottle.

I also noticed that on one of my fuel injectors, the wiring was completely exposed on both wires and I'm kinda wondering if that's where my miss is coming from...not sure how easy that will be to change out. I managed to get some silicone tape (for wrapping leaky pipes and stuff...couldn't find any electric tape) around the individual wires and then wrapped them both up good and tight. More of a temp. fix to a semi-permanent problem.

I also ripped out all my carpet...I like it a lot better that way honestly...and to be perfectly honest, I really didn't notice any difference in road noise from my Jeep without the carpet. Oh and I didn't remove my console for the install...after numerous failed attempts, I managed to route the cable out the front of the console without removing it.

I didn't try too hard... it didn't feel like it was gonna pop out without breaking...so I said screw it and just fished the cable through until it popped out where I needed it to, leaving the bezel in place.

In regards to that... what's a good way to properly fix that or will wrapping it in the silicone tape work fine? There's not a lot of slack in the wire so I can't just cut the exposed wire out and splice it back together plus the wire is exposed starting right where it goes into the injector connector so I'd prolly need to replace the connector.

I'm mainly suspicious that perhaps that's why my engine was missing at times...BOTH wires were exposed...almost looked like they'd been scraped up pretty good and I'm afraid the wires were shorting out/arcing at times.

If you do break your bezel, mighty putty (as seen on tv with bill maze) Works excellent. Mine had broke while hurculining tub. Used some mighty putty, let it dry. fixed it like nothing.
