5W/30 Motor Oil in NV3550?

I know there are hundreds of threads on the manual transmissions and what fluids to use.

I ran across this site Lubricant for New Venture Gear 3500, 4500, and 5600 Transmissions and was considering the Mobil 1 synthetic 5W/30 for my NV3550.

A few months back I changed the oil in transmission to Pennzoil Synchromesh (used jeep with 100,000 miles). It did quiet the marble rattle noise that I've read is common when in neutral, but lately with the colder weather it is not shifting very well. (The pennzoil synchromesh is not synthetic)

I've read all the details and have seen that in the AX transmissions a 10W/30 motor oil has been recommended so motor oil must be low sulfur and not damage "yellow metals".

The reasoning in the article seems to agree with other sources I've found on the NV transmissions.

Has anybody run a synthetic motor oil in their NV3550 for extended length of time? (or even in the AX series of man. transmission)

I have run the M1 in my ax15 since Jun or so and couldn't be happier. The NV trannies are a whole other animal from my understanding and only seem to like the factory stuff. I'm sure it's more expensive than the M1 but a new tranny cost more! Just dome food for thought.

Anybody else? I found this on Jeepforum -

I rebuild AX-5 & AX-15 transmissions for a little side cash, as well as other Jeep repairs & upgrades, so I do have some knowledge, and I try to research as much as I can to help myself stay current.

What I offer up here on JF is usually suggestions based on knowledge I learned from many great people in the JF community, and my own opinions & experiences.

I can, have been, and will be wrong sometimes.

The Jeep literature concerning the NV3550 calls for a specific Mopar manual transmission fluid. Which according to what I understand is considered by Jeep to be a "lifetime" fluid that does not require periodic changing for maintenance purposes. However, seals can leak, fluids can become contaminated (water intrusion comes to mind) or transmission repairs are sometimes required, so at some point along the way the fluid may need to be replaced. Using their fluid, or one meeting their requirements would certainly be a safe way to go.

On the other hand, I have dones some digging around and the best info I have found is that the fluid in the Mopar NV3550 bottles is basically 5w-30 synthetic motor oil. My personal opinion is that the synthetic aspect is to address the "lifetime" service life of the oil. Otherwise, routine oil changes of the NV3550 with conventional oil should be just fine in my opinion. Furthermore, the difference between 5w-30 (like the Mopar flavor) and the 10w-30 that I use in our AX-15 transmissions in our 2 YJ's is negligible at best.

I wouldn't recommend you to do anything that you're uncomfortable with, but if my Jeep had a NV3550 in it, I would fill it full of 10w-30 and sleep like a baby.

So for me,
1) Not going to the dealer for anything. I used ATF+3 in my dakota for 2-3 changes until ATF+4 was available at retail. 190,xxx on its transmission, no problems.
2) The non-synthetic Penzoil synchromesh (approved replacement for Chrysler fluid) is not cutting it in the cold.

Well that seems like a fairly definitive answer there.

Any input on using Mobil 1 10W-30 in a NV-3550 transmission?
