8.8 question

I know the answer is on here somewhere. Will a 8.8 out of a 2001 ford sport work for my D35 swap into my 94 wrangler. Most of the swaps I read here are between 95 & 97 years. Thanks I'm new to Jeep and this forum. Sorry if I'm being a pain.

According to this guy

8.8 Facts, Opinions & How-to's (f.a.q.)

a 2001 would work fine.

Also from the reading I've been doing, am I correct when I say I can not put a set of 4.10 ring and pinion in a D30 housing to replace the 3.07's because of the housing size.

If I can not changed the front D30 to 4.10's would I be alright running an 8.8 3.73's with 35" tires. Mostly street use. I be leave the 3.73's will fit the D30 front end. Not looking to spend a lot of money were the primary use will be on the street. But I do want to get it right the first time around.

My setup is a 4.0 with a 5 speed.

I'm just trying to get enough info to start the build. Thanks for the help.

dana 30 came from the factory with 4.10/4.11,(4cly yj/tj/xj etc) so no issues, you may need to change the carrier however.

Thank you. I misunderstood what I was reading. I didn't think the 4.10;s for some reason would fit in the housing it's self. I'll buy a carrier. Sorry about the lack of knowledge and thank you for the answer. I be leave I would be better off with 4.10's from all that I've read with the 35's.

Thanks again.

before you buy the carrier check the gear break points for the carrier, you may be okay with your stock one. you might also want to look into what a complete axle in junk yard would run you vs the cost of the gear swap.

If you've got 3.07 in the D30 now you will need a new carrier for the 4.10s. The case break is 3.54

As far as the ring gear fitting under the stock diff cover; no problemo. My 4.56 fit under my stock D30 cover.

If you're going to be running 35s on the 4.0L with manual you might consider 4.56 or 4.88 even. 3.73 on 33s with a 4.0L and AX-15 and I had no 5th gear except to keep RPM low while cruising down the highway. 33s w/4.56 and I have 5th gear back. 4.56 on 35s and you may not be happy with the power in 5th.

That's great information guys thanks.

Do you guys have any suggestions for a good street setup with some playing in the woods. I live in Mass, so not a lot of rock climbing. More than likely just trails, hills and a little mud.

I don't need to run 35's. I just like the look. I'll run 33's with 4.56 gears.

I do have an 8.8 4.10 setup I can have free and in good shape. What is the general thought on running 4.10 with 33's and the five speed and 4.0. Does the difference between the 4.10's and the 4.56's make it a deal breaker.

I blow at the gearing part. I would never get it set up correctly by myself. So again I appreciate the help.

This is not a daily drive. More a weekend ride. But I want to do it right.

If it's not a DD the 4.10s on 33s will work out. 5th may be a little underpowered trying to pass or climb even a slight incline at highway speed.

Here's a good chart to see what you'd like as far as tires and gearing goes. As you can see with 33s and 4.56 I'm right between the best set up for daily driving and power for the trails.

At 65 down the highway I turn 2500 RPM in 5th.

After looking at the chart I differently want to run 4.56's. That seems to be a good all around gear for 33's or 35's in my situation.

My free 2001 Explorer sport 8.8 4.10's turned out to be 3.73's. NO GOOD.

So here is my question. Will the 3.73 carrier except a 4.56 ring and pinion. I now I found the thread with that info on it somewhere. I should have book marked it. Correct me if I'm wrong but I be leave it's called cage break.

Indeed it will. My Sahara had 3.73s and that carrier (front and back) is good for everything numerically higher, so 4.56s will go on just fine. Only reason I chaged my rear carrier is to go from the stock limited slip to an open carrier to work with my Lock Right.

And it's case break.

Case break. I was close. I've been reading so much I'm getting a little screwed up.
Thank You.
Okay 2001 8.8 sport 3.73 to 4.56 gear swap coming up.

Thanks for the help I'm learning.

Ah, crap. You're talking about the 8.8 carrier.

For the D35, yes, the 3.73 carrier will work with 4.56. I don't know about the 8.8, though.

EDIT: Did a quick google. Have a read here: http://www.jeepz.com/forum/drivetrai...axle-swap.html (same info linked by Burton)

Sounds like there is no case break, you would just need a notched cross shaft.

There is no case break for an 8.8 axle.

I'm a little confused on no case break on the 8.8. Does that mean any ring and pinion ratio will fit or what it is there is a my only option. Sorry for the stupidity. This really is my weak point.

Okay. Found the answer on the gear swap. From what I read I can change the 3.73 to 4.56 on the carrier of the 8.8 that's great.

Now I'm trying to find out what a notched cross shaft is. I'll keep looking.

My front D30 has a 3.07 ratio. Will I be able to do a 4.56 gear swap on that carrier or am I looking at trying to find another carrier with 3.73 like KeeblerKO to fit the D30 and then change it to 4.56's.

Thanks again. You guys have been an unbelievable help. Once I get this all straightened out and have the right parts, I'll start a build tread if anyone is interested.
