94 jeep wrangler grinding noise?

so lets start out i bought a 94 jeep wrangler 4.0 5 speed today. I was driving for a while and i started to hear griding noise coming from the rear of the jeep. i thought maybe i had something in my drum or something. i go home take of both rear tires brakes are shot. so i decided to see if that was where the noise was coming from.. i put the rear on jack stands and the grinding noise seems to be coming from the transfer case or tranny(trans shifts really smooth though.. It also doesnt let me shift my transfer case in to fourwheel drive. so my question is wold a transfer case make a grinding noise? does that mean its shot or just possibly low on atf fluid?

answers please

You posted in the TJ forum, your 94' is a YJ.
But yes I would start with checking the fluid.
If you are certain it is coming from the transfer case it would be a good idea to pull and look inside. They are not as difficult to work on as many people think.
Do a search on SYE install there is a good write up splitting the case on working on it to give you an idea.
Picking up a manual would also be a good idea.
Your transfer case is a NP-231-j
