97 4.0 stalling out under load????

I've got a 97 sport 4.0 5-speed. Everytime i start the truck and take off, the truck will sputter and almost die under load through 1st and 2nd gear. if i push in the clutch and rev it up it does fine and has no problems. If i drive the jeep around for an hour and turn it off for two minutes, it'll do the same thing again as soon as i crank it back up. It only does it the first time i go through the gears after start-up and then won't do it again unless i kill the motor and restart.

It feels like there is trash in the fuel line and it just clogs the line cutting off fuel to the motor. i don't think that is it because of how it only does it the first time through the gears at start up.

I've already changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor button. Also, i hooked up the timing light and realized i couldn't find a timing tab anywhere on the block or bottom of the motor to check the timing against.

Any ideas????

I'm no mechanic but I'm pretty sure they auto time themselves

that's what i thought until i looked around and realized it was a distributor system instead of the coilpack. it could be something as simple as a vaccumn line which has the advance off, but if has a distributor you can alter the timing.

i just cleaned out the throttle body and had a shop run the pressurized fuel injector cleaner to see if they were clogged and it still hasn't corrected the problem.

i'm stumped.

I am pretty sure it is not going to be a timing issue due to the fact you say it is ok once you get through the first couple of gears.I would say it it sounds more like a weak fuel pump.Sounds like once the pump starts pumping it is ok but it has trouble starting to pump fuel once the lines loss pressure.

Symptoms: Every time you start it, whether cold or hot? But once it runs a moment, it runs fine?

Sounds to me like it's doing it until it goes into closed loop. The computer recognized the problem and compensates for it.

I'd start with the vacuum system - look for a vacuum leak. When in open loop the leak affects it, but in closed loop it richens the system enough so you don't feel it.
Vacuum lines, manifold gaskets etc.
