97 automatic shifter

Hey I have a 97 automatic and my jeep will start but I cant get it out of park. The button on the shifter wont go in so i took the panel under the steering wheel off. I can see the mechanism trying to move when i push the button. I also found a ground wire close by but it is not connected to anything. im not sure if it is related to my problem. Please Help!

Did you try pressing in on the brake? It won't move from park unless you do.

Likely nothing more wrong than the nylon pushrod inside the shift lever is broken. That is what the push-button on the handle pushes down on to get it to unlock. You can pull the handle off to verify it pretty easily by lifting straight up on the handle. It is on there tight and will take some muscle but no screws or anything else holds the handle onto the lever.

Please Help!

I took the shifter knob off and it wasnt the problem. I traced the chord from the transmission to the back of the steering column and pulled it out. the mechanism seems to be working fine and the botton will go in now but i still cant move it out of park. I put the chord back in the back of the steering column and the button on the shifter will go in now but still no shifter movement.

If it won't move out of Park, I still suspect it's nothing more than the push rod inside the shifter isn't able to push the unlocking mechanism at the base of the shifter far enough to unlock. I would remove the console so you can get to the shifter's unlocking mechanism to see it so you can get to the root of the problem.
