97 TJ leaks fuel when overfilled...

The leak happens only when the tank is overfilled (there is a station that has the cut off very late). This is the second time I smell it, the first time it was a vague smell of gas but saturday the gas station REALLY overfilled and there was quite a bit of gas on the ground.

The leak stopped within few minutes (The gas gauge was still way pass F that pump must have been way broken GRR $$$$).

I looked at filler neck (when it was leaking) that was clean. I guess maybe the fuel pump sealer ? I'm ready to drop the tank (I want to drive it until the fuel is low to reduce the weight) but I would love to have a "look here to start" advice.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same thing, I noticed that my skid had some rot so I ordered a new skid and will be dropping the tank this week to find the problem. I'll let you know what I find with mine

My skid is good but it seems that there is an insulation/shock absorbing (???) material between the (plastic) thank and the skid and that material is not in great conditions (it is 16 years old so, hardly surprising). However I do not think that has anything to do with the leak.

It could be something related to the rollover mechanism too ... but my money is still on the seal.

I wasn't saying the skid had anything to do with the leak. Just saying didn't want to drop it twice

Hmm I interested in knowing what you find! I have the same issue if I let the pump click off full then I lose some too had the tank checked and it was fine so believe its in the filler tube but haven't had a chance to check it yet.

Since I am going all the way to remove the tank I'm 1/2 tempted to try this mod as well:

If it is the filler tube it should be easy to figure out just looking at it the filler neck from the side to the tank is all clearly visible.

This is a known problem with TJ's. There are a bunch of write ups if you google it

I'm too lazy to post a link
