97 TJ mechanical questions

New to wranglers and new to working on engines etc. I am wanting to learn how to work on my own TJ. I don't know much but am relying on these threads and you great people to help me out along the way to fixing up my new to me 97 TJ. I am currently wanting to work on the mechanics of the jeep during summer and this winter tear it down a little and fix rust and paint etc. any suggestions on what to look for and go through on the engine? I feel like it idles a little high or more so loud. It starts at about 1500 rpm and then drops to 1000 rpm and idles. Once I am driving for a couple miles it starts to squeal slightly not real loud but its annoying. Any suggestions or know what it may be?

I'd bet it's your intake/exhaust manifold gasket. The high idle may be from it sucking air, and that could be the squeal you hear. Mine had some of the bolts broken when I got it, and some of the gasket was gone. It was so bad that I could press against the side of the throttle body with my hand and the squeal would lessen and the idle would settle down. Or spray some starting fluid around it and see if the idle increases.
