This is a really dumb question, I know. However, I tore my engine down for rebuild, and have everything back from the machine shop and ready to install.
I have noticed that I can insert the camshaft "too far," so to speak; it kind of floats in the bearings, able to be pushed in or pulled out very easily. As I recall this is how it felt when I removed it, but I just want to be perfectly sure. It appears that the only thing holding it in place when running will be the timing chain on its sprocket. Does that sound right, or am I missing anything? I understand that the timing cover is going to prevent it from sliding out, but is it just the chain that keeps the whole camshaft from sliding in a bit? I guess the distributor gears will help keep it in place too, eh?
Again, I know: dumb question. It was JUST long enough ago that I tore it down that I don't quite recall what the camshaft felt like when it was in place. I don't want to miss anything!
Thanks folks!
