97 Wrangler random stall/misfire

I have a 97 wrangler 4 cyl 2.5 liter just bought it. MY First Jeep So Here is the deal. I drove it for the first two weeks back and forth to work, 35 miles each way. No problems for that time period. Then after the two weeks it stalled out on me once when I was parking.??? Then it began to misfire at high speeds roughly 65mph when that happened I down shifted and everything was cool. Then a week or too later I hopped in the jeep after it sat for a week or so and drove it for about 3 miles at about 35 mph. I came up to a stop sign and it stalled out. It took about 4 or 5 minutes before it would start again. Then I drove 1/2 mile, sat with it shut off for 10-15minutes and it started to sputter when I was leaving. I told my mechanic all this and he said he really can't do anything until it happens. He drove it several times and nothing, I have driven a few short miles and nothing. Has this happened to anyone before. It has 185,000 miles on it. After reading several; other things I am starting with coil $60 and if that doesn't work then I have heard the crank sensor. Crank sensor should throw a code (check engine light).

Before you throw and $$$ at anything, do the no-cost/easy stuff.

Pull a plug, and see if it's burnt or carbon'd up. While there, see how old/beat up the wires are. Bad plugs + bad wires = bad running jeep.

Since it's intermittent, it doesn't SOUND electrical.

So, my take is to look at the fuel system. I don't know where you live, but if it's been hot, you could have some vapor lock issues. Also, a clogged fuel filter, weak sending unit on the fuel pump. If it only did it at low or hi speed, I'd say check the carb too (97's are carburated I believe).

Also, not a likely source, but a VERY clogged air filter can cause some power loss and on something with that many miles may give that set of symtoms.

If it's not any of that, check back and see if there are additional ideas, but my mantra on these types of things are to start simple and cheap first before you spend any cash on what it prolly ain't.

Start off fresh, new champion copper core plugs, new wires, new cap, new rotor, see what happens. You need to baseline it first, before you do the stuff I mentioned put a couple of 20 ounce bottles of Chevron Techron through the gas tank, use the FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER not the fuel injection cleaner, the system cleaner has more cleaners in it then the injector cleaner. Pull the air box over the throttle body and look down inside, if it is all black and sooty below the butterfly clean it with a sensor safe throttle body cleaner. Then do the plugs and stuff. I would also pull all your grounds and clean them on both the terminals on the wires and where they ground to.
