'97 Wrangler Rear Wheel Studs -- Stripped

I have two stripped rear wheel studs (one on each rear wheel). So I picked up two new studs at Pep Boys and attempted to replace them. I removed one wheel and pounded out the old, stripped stud. Then I inserted the new one and placed a few washers over the threads and tightened the lug nut in order to draw-in the stud. However, it didn't work as planned. The stud spins in the hole in the axle. It appears as if the whole in the axle is stripped. Luckily I was able to get a bite on the backside of the stud with some locking pliars in order to loosen the lug nut and remove that stud.

I figured I would try the other missing stud on the opposite rear wheel, and attempted the same procedure. But I had the exact same outcome. What is going on here?

Can it be that both axles have a stripped receptacle for the wheel stud? That seems unlikely. Or could it be the new studs that I purchased from Pep Boys are the wrong size? To the naked eye, they appear to be the same size as the old studs I removed.

Help? What should I do?

Had the same problem yesterday, had two that were damaged by seized lugnuts. Went to NAPA and picked up four (carry two extras). I paid $20.85 for four studs and four new lugnuts. Stealer is right!!
Oh and I removed all twenty nuts and treated them to an Anti-Seize bath.
