'97 Wrangler SE OIL Pressure Gauge ?

The Oil Pressure gauge in my '97 Wrangler SE fluctuates from Zero to 40. Is that normal? It seems fine while in gear and driving (stays around 40). But when I stop at a light and it is idling, it drops near Zero and the "Check Gauge" light turns on for a second. Then it bounces back up near 15. I don't know if this is normal... Is the pressure supposed to drop when it is idling?

First thing have you actually checked your oil and see if it is full?
if it has oil have someone put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it the check pressure.You may have a sending unit failing.

The oil pres gauge is really just telling you
that you have pressure or not
not how much really
if it bothers you,you can install a real guage

Mine does almost the same thing with 10-30 oil in it. I went to 20-50 for the summer and it's much better now. I have 154,k on mine and fiqure it's time for a oil pump replacement.

No, his '97 TJ's oil pressure gauge (when it is working properly that is) actually does indicate the true oil pressure. It was later TJs (probably after 2001 or so) when they reprogrammed the oil pressure gauge to only indicate the absence or presence of oil pressure.

Knowing of the issues that early '97/98 TJs had with their oil pressure senders, as my '97 TJ had as well, I'd bet it's nothing more than a bad oil pressure sender which can easily be swapped in five minutes.

Mine would do the same thing, indicate zero oil pressure once in a while, which I have to tell you that when it happens on a lonely dark remote desert road as happened to me, it is not a fun thing to have happen. That bright red Check Gauges light and the zero oil pressure indication will really get your hear pumping when you still have 25 miles to go and you haven't seen another vehicle in an hour and you're in the middle of the desert 75 miles from Las Vegas on a small two-lane remote desert road.

had the same problem also changed sending unit and it fixed the problem. It is very easy to change. should take you about 5 min.

Mine does the same thing and I feel your pain Jerry!
I was riding one night in a 266,000 acre National Forest and stopped at a crossroad, Just happend to look at the oil pressure gauge whille kinda scanning over the dash. When I seen 5lbs of oil pressure I just about crapped my pants!

Thank you all for your input. I resolved this oil pressure issue simply by removing and cleaning the electrial connector on the top of the oil pressure sender. I guess it was shorting out, and therefore it was not showing the true pressure. After cleaning... now the gauge is within the proper oil pressure range (17 psi thru 45 psi).
