97 Wrangler Sputtering Jeeps are new to me.

Hello all,
Ok I am new to jeeps and new to this forum. Me & my wife decided to pick up a used jeep (97 Wrangler 2.0 4cyl) Yah I know, I know should have went with the 6cyl. We plan on cruising the country back roads not mudding or towing, so where I am its amazing to find something with a solid frame and body with being 12 years old. So I went with the 4cyl. Make a long story short.... I thought I had it nailed down to the fact that it sputtered briefly in 4th & 5th gear (tonight proved me wrong by doing it in 2nd gear), It will sputter and buck real quick. I have been in 4th and 5th without this happening. Can anyone help me narrow this down? I have read on other forums about 02 sensors. Well the guy I bought this from actually just put new ones in for it to pass inspection as recent as a month ago. He put on a new exhaust manifold (the other was cracked) But the new one is loud still and he thought maybe he didnt re-tighten after a while? Could it be that?

Have you checked your spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor to see what condition they're in?

Have a receipt sitting right here for new plugs and wires. Dont know about the distributer cap and rotor. I will look into thanks. Also, you know anything about this guy saying he put an exhaust manifold on brand new, sounded great then began to get loud again. Re-tighten?

I have the same problem in 1st. I have heard it could be the idle motor. I found a discussion about it here.

90 yj 2.5L - idle speed motor/actuator question - Jeepz.com

Hope this helps ...

I have been really busy with work and its a second vehicle, so I really havent drove many miles on it but took it out for quick runs this week (2) and it has not done it. Im crossing my fingers. It sat for a whole winter. Maybe a little bad gas? I will see.

Well, things were looking good for a bit, seemed to only do it when sometimes hitting a large bump, but now it has gotten worse. Some days wont be a sign of it but now it will do it in all the gears, seems to be no rhyme or reason when it does it now.

Hey I had mine fixed. It was the crank sensor. Have it checked out.
