98 Tj bucking and surging while driving

I have a 98 jeep tj 4.0 manual that we just picked up. While hot we will be driving down the road and it will start bucking and surging start down shifting and it doesnt get any better. Clutch it and it idles fine but engage it back into gear say second while coasting at 10mph it still bucks and goes on then it just clears up. I'd been driving the jeep for an hr when this happened. It did this twice on me in an hr. Is it motor or transmission related? Thanks y'all

Could be one of the O2 sensors. Has It thrown any codes, or just the bucking?
I had a similar problem, it would go through a bucking stage a few minutes after starting it up and driving, and then it would be fine until the next time I turned it off.
Replaced both sensors and it's been fine ever since.
Good luck!

Maybe a fuel pump going and acting up intermittently. I had a similar issue on my rig. It would idle fine and rev while not under load. When you try to move, it would stall and buck. The computer would go to increase fuel delivery when under load and the pump couldn't keep up. Had to swap it on the side on the road on July 1st in Phoenix AZ.

Worth a look see.

It tried to do it again today but stoppd when I down shifted but it was just for a second. Well then it's either 02 or fuel pump. Is there any way to check the fuel pump? How many 02s are on a 4.0

Strange there is no code being thrown. Maybe have a friend or trusted mechanic with a realtime scan tool attached drive around the block with you and.

If the computer is going full rich due to failed sensor, it will spew black smoke.
