99 TJ Gas Gauge Issue

Hello everyone, I've had my 99 Wrangler TJ Sport for a little over a year now and love it, but recently ran into an issue I could use some help with.

I filled my gas tank on friday it is now sunday and my fuel gauge on the cluster is still reading E it never went up when i filled it and still hasnt corrected itself, what could it be, how much may it cost?

my jeep is a 4.0 six cyl., 30in tires, basically stock, 114000 miles.... just looking for a solution.

p.s. i already took the cluster off and cleaned the contacts and nothing has happened, i also tried to hold the odometer down and start it to test the gauges they fuel gauge jumped to full and then went right back to Empty and still is there....

My gauge on my 98 has never worked quite right. It would do that, stay at "E" then eventually (maybe 10-15) start cycles it would go up, then again maybe it wouldn't. I just used my odometer to track my fuel usage. My 97 TJ's gas gauge is dead on though.

290 on 10 gallons? You get 29 to the gallon? I call bullsheit! I drive 92 miles to work round trip all hwy and get 19 to the gallon going 55. 3.07 on 33's. I don't think you can get that much out a 4 cyl!

Haha, the gas gauge on the Wrangler (or most Chrysler's) are infamous for not working. It's merely a suggestion. I filled up today with $42 and didn't make it past the half-way mark. If it really is bother you, more then likely your gas sending unit has broke or stuck in the gas tank. Try banging on the gas tank with a rubber hammer or your foot. Or if the entire unit is busted, then you just need to drop the gas tank and replace. I made a nice write up on how to go about this, search my threads or search google for burton160w gas tank ping ball or something.

More then likely it's a temporary issue. Wait it out for a little while and it may just fix itself. It's probably nothing to do with the gauge.

The unit is an easy replacement that requires a hydrolic lift, two jackstands, a standard socket kit and 3-4 hours. But it'll be big BUCKS to pay someone else to change it out. The replacement unit is one whole assembly that includes the fuel pump, filter, and gas leveler.

The gauge on my 99 doesnt work well either...

sometimes it'll read correctly but others it'll just go to about 3/4 full after filling the tank...gaslight still works correctly so doesnt bother me!

Quick question, I have a 99 tj too and I was just wondering the gas tank size, I am pretty sure it's 19 gallons from what I've read, but there was also a 15 gallon. Thanks, dont mean to hijack your thread!

^ 97-99 can have either the 15 or gallon tank... except technically they're the same tank. Chrysler has simply put a breather hose on the 15 gallon to "trick" the tank into thinking it's full when it's not. You can cut the hose down to eliminate this. If you have a I6, then more then likely it's the 19 gallon.

Does it do that when its full or does it start to do that at a certain gas level?
