A/C blowing cold air through floor vents

I have a 2002 wrangler and when I turn the A/C on it blows about 50% of the air out the floor heater vents. The air is cold and it does seem to regulate some over a few minutes time. What I mean by regulate is that the air eventually starts coming out the dash vents a little more strong- It really never stops blowing out the floor vents.
I'm guessing there is some kind of mechanism that directs the air flow for top or bottom distribution. I don't know where to find this mechanism or how it works.
Any help would be appreciated.

does it work like it should for heat? ie defrost or floor when set to those or does it also come out the center vents(besides the small side window ones)

ID:	132437The selector switch uses vacuum to control which vents the air blows through. It sounds to me like you have a vacuum leak at the switch or at a connection somewhere under the dash, or maybe at the vacuum reservoir under the passenger front fender.

I have the same issue with my 2002 TJ and only the top 2 fan speeds work. Occasionally i can feel AC or heat coming out through the dash vents but it's real faint and doesn't last,it blows mainly through the defrost vent and floor vents.

There is a so called door or flapper that cycles open or closed to direct the flow one wy or the other. You can sometimes hear it flap open when the direction of airflow changes. They featured this on truckU the other day and said it was a common problem. The spring or something fails. Sounds like your is staying half open and not cycling all the way.

Thanks for the info. I will check for a vacuum leak and then the spring.

I'd bet your resistor motor is on it's way out

I did finally get a new blower motor resistor in AND found a vacuum line unplugged under the battery behind the passenger side wheel well. Now all my fan speeds work and front vents too

I have a similar issue except that when the dash vents are blowing cold the floor vents are blowing very warm air. Anyone?
