A/C Question - Cold Air Blowing from Everywhere!

I have a '97 TJ. The controls have two switches you can slide left to right. With one set to max a/c + recirculate and the other all the way to the left in the "blue (cold); it blows nice and cold. But, air comes out of the vents, down by my feet, and from the defrost area by the windshield.

Is this normal? It seems like if all that air was coming out of the vents it would make things seem cooler in there. Also, when cold air is blowing on the windshield it will fog it up somethimes.

I know the newer style controls have three knobs - one of which allows you to select where the air is coming from.

I am thinking that there is a blend door in there somewhere that is stuck wide open...

I'm having the same problem with my '03 with the three knobs. I turn it on AC on the vents or heat it blows from all over. Listening in on this thread.

Check the vacuum actuator for the dampers in the box under the dash, on my 97 tj there are three. On mine one of the levers is broken off so the centre vents never open. Not sure if this is the same problem you have. But it's easy to check.

Does anybody else have any insight into the problem that I am having? I realize that it is a holiday weekend and that a lot of folks are probably out wheeling instead of looking at this forum!

Item #2, #31 and #32 are the ones I'm referring too. I have no air coming out of the centre of the dash since the lever is broken off. The Jeep needs to be running to generate vacuum, then you can move your a/c control lever to see if the dampers are working or not. Switch from defrost to heat, etc. You need to look up from the drivers side floor to see the dampers, or you can pull off the lower drivers side dash trim panel if you like.

Same thing happens in my 98.
Some cold air is coming out near the floor.
Not the defrost vents though.
I don't know if it's normal or not,
but I'm not gonna mess with it.
I actually like it that way.
It helps to cool off my hot a$$ boots.

I have an '02 with the same issue. Cold air on the floor. Is there a cheap fix or should I just live with it???

If it is the same problem I have; the answer is yes or no depending on which way you go. Chrysler only sells the entire heater duct assembly as one piece. The lever for the centre duct is busted inside and can't be fixed or replaced. And you would have to rip out the entire dash to replace it. BUT my cheap fix was to drill a hole in the front of the dash near the cigarette lighter and mount a lawn mower throttle cable modified to push the damper open... Works like a charm. I just had to adjust it yesterday after about a year. My main reason was for the heater since it gets kinda cool around January.

Please look at the attachment in my earlier post.
