Abnormal Whining Sound

I'm hearing a whining noise coming from under the hood and trying to track it down...just started noticing it today. It changes with RPMs and makes the noise in all gears as well as while idling and in neutral, clutch in or out.

It's not a high pitched shriek but more of a low-pitched whine...it'll do it for a bit and then it goes away...then it starts doing it again and goes away, etc. I tried to record a video (for the sound), but not sure if you'll be able to hear it. Before I recorded the video, when I hit the gas it would get louder and faster so I'm assuming it's one of the accessories being driven by the belt, but being new to Jeeps, I'm not sure on that. Hoping it's a common issue and nothing serious on the verge of going out.

If you crank your volume waaaaaay up, you can hear it in this...but it's kinda difficult. You'll also hear me rev it up once or twice lightly and you'll hear the sound disappear (sometimes it would disappear and other times it would get louder and faster) and return as it goes back to idle.

Anyone know the cause and how to fix it?

i just looked into this same sound today on my tj. it behaves in the same way you describe. try disconnecting the air intake hose from your air box (1 hose clamp) and move it around a bit while the motor idles. does it alter the noise? thats where my noise is coming from but it got dark before i could investigate it further. sounds like it's coming from down near the intake. let meknow what you find.... i thought it was a power steering pump but then i realized the noise was coming from right behind the pump.

I have the same sound, but tends to be at an idle... and after it sits a few seconds it goes away, then as soon as I tap the gas...its back. or my jeep just makes to many other noises to notice while driving..... I was told it could be my alternator, but wouldn't that make a sound like a bad belt?

Take a long screwdriver or an extension and hold it on as many of the spots that you think the noise is coming from as you can, if you hold the other end to your ear, you will hear it plain as day. I have a very similar sound in mine, happened right after I put on an intake, but I kinda like it so I let it be. I think it was the air rushing over the throttle body door.

My Jeep actually just started doing this same thing today and it only seems to do it when I have the fan for the heater on.

Mine did it when the fan was off...first thing I did when I heard it was turn the blower fan off as it was the first thing that came to mind.

On an unrelated note:
My Jeep started idling at 1500 RPMs today and wouldn't drop until I pumped the brakes up and then held the pedal down to work the brake booster...then it dropped and stayed at normal idle. I remember this has been discussed a few times...did anyone figure out the cause of that? No CEL...just high idle.

Sounds like a bearing going out on the alternator.
If you can't isolate it by the makeshift stethoscope, try a paper towel tube to your ear.

Hrmm...okay, I wonder if it was just because it was so damn it wasn't lubricating very well. It hasn't done it for the past 2 days.

Good luck getting it fixed, I don't know what the problem is. I only clicked on the the thread because, based on the title I thought it was a thread about our wives.

That whining is more like the Jeep valve tap...eventually it goes on for so long that it becomes a normal whine and all you can do it accept the fact that you're stuck with it and just learn to ignore it

Take her to Hawaii for a few days - see if that stops her whine.

Aw man...my dad took my brother and I to Hawaii in 2003. Soooo beautiful...problem is, if you take your woman to Hawaii, it'll shut her up til you come home. Then all you'll hear about is her whining about when you're gonna take her back or why you aren't willing to move somewhere warmer. lol
