AC lever doesn't change location of air

So, my 2002 Wrangler is totally awesome, but one nagging thing I'd like to fix is the fact that the AC blows cold but when I put the lever so it will blow in my face it does't move. Only blows out the little side window anti-fogging vents and floor. The defrost works fine so when I turn that on the air does blow on the window.

Any ideas? Prefer the cheap, shade tree kind.

Check your vacuum lines under the hood, especially the one to the TB manifold area. Then look under the dash behind your vent control switch. There should be 3 vacuum actuators that controls vent locations. Check their function while you change the vent control to ensure they are functioning properly.

If it's not the vacuum lines check the levers look above & to the right of the gas pedal & watch the linkages as you move the selector the arms are famous for breaking or coming out, arms not sold as a separate part at the dealer but available in O mix Ada brand

OP, he's referring to the arms that connect to the 3 round actuators as seen in the pic, these control vent locations. Check each for connections and function while moving vent lever.

Scooter 101, did you ever figure out the issue? I am having the same issue with my 97 TJ and trying to figure out where to start. If you figured it out, it may give me a jumping off point.

On your 97, crawl under the. Jeep (quicker that removing battery, right below battery you'll probably find a short piece of rubber vacuum line connecting a plastic line to a canister thingy (real technical term). Hook her up or replace and you'll be good to go.

I had the same problem and that's what it was.
