after market roof rack 04 soft top

Just looking for some input and or recommendations for a roof rack for my 04 tj X. Looking to carry my kayaks but still want to be able to drop my top without interference from the rack. Have seen a few just looking for info on ease of installation and quality of rack.

Check out some of the Roof Racks we have on our site. Most of them will have install instruction PDFs so you can see what is involved in putting them on.

A few of the racks, like this Olympic Sports Rack will say specifically that they fold back so you can remove the factory top easily. This one says that there are two knobs to allow you to take the top down and it'll hold 250 lbs which should be enough for your kayaks.

Let me know if you have any questions or if you'd like a quote!

I have a smittybilt roof rack for my kayaks. It has 3 rails that attach by hand screws. It's not simple to put top down since rails need to come off but if you only had them on when transporting kayaks it wouldn't be too bad. Plenty of spots to ratchet tie kayaks. It definitely increases noise inside cab but any roof rack will.

I have the Garvin for my 06. It has 4 bolts (i swapped out for wing nuts) to remove then the whole thing tilts back. It does not interfere with my rear bumper/tire carrier at all. Then you can undo the top just like normal. I have transported two kayaks plus two bikes, and one trip a roof top fold out tent with no problems.
