Hey everyone, I was just curious for those of you who run a lot of other accessories in your jeeps such as CB radios, winches, big light bars, etc.... What kind of batteries are you guys using??
None of the batteries we use in our Jeeps like Diehard Platinums, Odysseys, or Optimas are gel cell. They're all just a normal lead-acid design battery. Our alternators are not capable of charging a gel cell battery which is normally only used in some small eco cars. Another gel cell drawback is they're incapable of providing the high amounts of current our Jeeps and winches can require.
Glass mat not gel but unlike standard led acid with liquid acid just pored in they don't leak and therefore the typical corrosion around the battery is absent
NorthStar AGM as mentioned above charging off a stock system can present some longevity issues. I guess you could always modify the regulator so it puts out the correct voltage for AGM..
The VR puts out the correct voltage for an AGM already, it doesn't require anything special to run an AGM battery in a Jeep. An AGM battery still uses standard lead-acid technology. Don't confuse an AGM battery with a gel cell battery, they are totally different and you cannot run a gel cell battery in our Jeeps or 99.9999% of the cars out there.
Maybe in some cases this might be true Jerry but some conventional AGM and pure lead AGM batteries have a greater charge acceptance over flooded batteries and require higher charge voltages to ensure a proper charge occurs after every discharge cycle.
X2... but the Odyssey P1200 and P1500 batteries made by Odyssey are sure a heck of a lot (!) more expensive than the Diehard Platinum was. It is those two that are the closest to the Diehard Platinum 3478DT they made for Sears.
I am running the X2 power battery from batteries plus, 880cca deep cycle agm battery, with top posts it was around 230$ they have an option for top and side post combination, but it was an additional 50-60$.
That one differs as it doesn't have the dual terminals, which makes or breaks a battery for me due to wanting to run my winch off the side terminals like I do on my Diehard Platinum. I think the 1500DT shown above for just over $250 is the one I'd want when my current battery goes, in 7 years or so.
You are going to pay more for side terminals. If you don't care then the regular 1500 (make sure it's not the 1500R, which fits JKs but NOT TJs) from 4WD for $238 is the ticket. Free shipping and if you get in touch with Tom S (just end a PM) he offers forum discounts. It's a great battery. After a series of batteries that lasted only 3 years and died slowly it's nice to have something reliable. I can listen to the radio for hours with the Jeep not running and it starts up without hesitation.
I originally posted in this thread based on a search in an effort to update the much desired battery these days since DieHard has died lol. Gonna go with the Odyssey 1500 as suggested, before the end of summer if not sooner.
I'll also update the issue I had with my dead battery/idle issue in case anyone stumbles upon this doing a search. The alternator would not charge it up on my drive home, as mentioned by Jerry at one point, possibly in another battery thread. So I took his advice and put it on a charger over night. Problem solved. Up and running fine today!
Whatever you do get an AGM flat-plate battery. The DieHard/Odyssey AGM's are the most highly recommended.
