you need to clean the terminals where the cable plugs in to the instrument cluster.

Mine has been doing that at random. If I push on the cluster it will come back alive. So, I'll put a second vote in for the wiring connection, but I haven't looked into fixing it yet.

I cleaned mine 100 times, makes no difference.... mine goes out and back on again with either accelerating or hitting bumps or just anything but cruising

I got my TJ 14 months ago. 3 weeks into driving it it went out completely. No gauges, no lights, etc. Tried cleaning the terminal and using white grease and it actually worked for 2 more weeks. The next time no such luck. Ended up getting the dealership to order a new module. While waiting for it to come in it started working again. Went ahead and replaced it though. No problem in the last 12 months since. Sucks cause the module/install was close to $450. Cold have gotten my softtop earlier if that hadn't set me back

It's fairly common with both the TJ and XJ's, same cluster, same plugs. I pulled my cluster when I replaced the cluster from idiot lights to gauges. Cleaned the plugs and sockets with electrical contact cleaner [plastic safe] the I tweaked the pins just a hair, really really really really small twist with a set of micro needle nose pliers, you almost could not see it. put some dielectric grease on the female sockets, used a tooth pick, did not want the stuff all over the place, just a touch and plugged it in, no problems after that and I did in in 2001.
The official fix is to get the dealer to replace the self docking plugs that are in the dash itself, you can do that too, it's just a matter of I think $17 per plug and a cut, solder, shrinktube. I think the dealer charges $300.

I think I'll definitely have to try the cleaning and dielectric grease first! $300-450 is some money that could go somewhere else.

Thanks for the info!

Best advice here. Chrysler put out a tech service bulletin, since this is a common prob. Don't know what I did with it, but I know I've posted it here before.

richp hit the nail on the head. Shortly after I bought my 2000 TJ I had a similar problem with it. Except when I took it back to the dealer (used car dealer) they had a mechanic who was trained to work on Jeeps. He knew exactly what was wrong. I only paid around $90 to have it fixed. That was about a year ago. I have not had any trouble with it again.

My Fiancee's 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport does this, but she has also reported the trans acting wierd when this happened, this morning. I told her to shut the car off and restart is and see if it went away, she said the trans issue resolved itself, but the gauges still read on zero and the Airbag and Brake lights stayed on. Think this could be connected, or think these are two totally separate issues?
