Hello everyone ... I bought my first TJ 98 in white color about a month ago. Everything is perfect except the Airbag light. It is constantly ON. Here is what I have done so far:
Checked the fuses behind the glove box and they are good.
Tried to clear the codes by removing positive battery connector and touching it with negative for about 10 seconds.
Tried reading the codes by holding the Trip meter button and then turning the ignition to ON. All the numbers went from 0 - 9 but didn't list any codes
I am sure I am doing something wrong to read the diagnostics codes. Also, horn works so not sure if it is clockscrew. Help please ...
I had a problem similar to this... My Speedometer and RPM meters stopped and my airbag light came on.. I disconnected and then reconnected my guage cluster... It has worked since then... about 3 weeks ago...
Have the same problem on mine. 06 rubicon. pulled everything apart yesterday, all connections appear to be clean and good. everything is plugged in. Pulled both fuses, also still good. Any other ideas????
ok my 98 wrangler was rained in so i had a whole list of issues one of them being my airbag light, mine went away after replacing the seatbelt, if the seatbelts get water in them than it will turn the airbag light on
On My 97 TJ when the Air Bag Light came on I had a guy with a Jeep Factory Scan tool try to read the codes but it would not communicate with the scanner so after I followed the diagnostic routine in the Factory Service Manual I detirmined that the Air Bag Module was Faulty (On Trans. Hump) They were like $380 at the Dealer I got one with the same Part # on eBay for $25 & that fixed it.
What diagnostic routine did you perform to determine this? My '02 airbag light has stayed on for quite some time. Performed all the other steps, connections, fuses, pull battery cables, etc.
For a while it would stay off, then all of a sudden it would ding and pop back on. One time I did notice that it was off, I turned the passenger airbag to Off, and it immediately came back on. Has stayed on since then.
Horn works as well. I've learned to just deal with it but if there is a way to tell for sure with out throwing money at it, I would like to hear the routine and can only hope that it would be the same on my '02 as on your '97.
Thanks. I just found a write up on jeepforum with the part number and everything. Stumbled upon it after researching more from here. Was not looking forward to buying the air bag module and then finding out that wasn't the issue.
Ok. So I was headed to my local radio shack to get the bulb to replace for my airbag light for passenger "Off" and all of a sudden the airbag light on the dash went off and the bulb down by shifter turned on and has now stayed on for 4 days. Odd.. Electrical and mechanical issues don't fix them selves. Could something else be wrong?
I got the bulb but haven't replaced it yet. 3 kids can suck up your weekends, so I just haven't had the chance but before I tear this all apart and replace, what else could the issue be because apparently the bulb is fine.
I bought my 98 tj last summer with several issues including a bad engine. I did the dash check and the airbag light didn't light all. First I checked the fuse, it was out. Replaced it. Then pulled the dash. Bulb was turned 1/4 way past the connectors. I knew then someone had disabled the whole system. I put bulb back in its spot. Light stayed on all the time. Both passenger and driver airbags were disconnected. I plugged them in and all was well. I do not have the passenger disconnect tho, that was an after new purchase recall type installation I think. Not quite what is happening with yours, just adding another set of possibilities to the whole issue. Someone may have tampered with the system. Maybe the control module is actually unplugged or something else prior owner related.
first the 98 does not display trouble codes in odometer, most other years can 98 does not
most of the the TJs including my wifes 04 rubi and my 98 sport do not have an airbag disable switch
finally some guys that snowplow disconnect the air bags as some guys claim inadvertent deployment of airbags when their plow hits an unseen snow covered obstacle like a curb or man hole cover slightly proud of the pavement or a parking barrier then the disable the idiot light
