all bad after o2 replacment

TJ was running fine, but drinking more juice than normal. check codes and got code 21. (o2)

so replaced o2 sensor and reset the computer. now the jeep runs like sh1t. sounds like a taxi now, eats more juice and idles really rough. Also coughs and splutters under load.

WTF???

and i can't put the old one back on as i chucked it out (dumb i know) also i had to cut the wires on the old one to reuse the electrical connector as the new o2 came with bare wires.

and no codes are showing up now.

any ideas?

don't really know. do you think you could've got wires crossed when you cut em? I would've thought it would've came with plug pre-attached, most I've seen did.

Depends on if you try to save $4 on an oem spec one. If you reset the comp then it may still be in it's 'learning cycle'. It could also be bad, what brand was it, most use bosch. Also which sensor was it, up stream or down stream.

If the sensors are not the culprit, it sounds like you have a bad vaccuum leak some where. Maybe a seal around your manifold possibly. Something had to make your O2 sensors go bad. They don't go bad for no reason.

There was another thread about 2 wks ago about this same problem. I believe it resolved itself after a few days due to the cpu going through enough cycles to get everything adjusted correctly.

dwdrums, was your car running much worse though?

It was the upsteam sensor.

dont know what brand it was, just picked it up from a 4wd shop. Might go to jeep and pick up a genuine one today and see if that fixes it.

I can hear a small sucking type noise from the manifold which makes me think there may be a vacuum leak. but i still think it's the sensor as the car was running fine then went sh1t house and all i changed was the sensor.

If you have a vac gauge at idle it should read right around a steady 18

Dave try to stay away from universal O2 sensors most are crap we had a customer that had to use the $79.00 o2s Universal did not even read on computer. I ordered him the OE sensors and it worked like a charm, Although On a Geo metro The o2 s are worth more than the car almost $600.00 for both jeeps are much cheaper.

To locate a vac leak quickly use some carb cleaner, brake cleaner, even water and with engine running spray around suspect areas, you will hear the idle change when you 'hit it'... not massive amounts of spray either, just a shot or two quick spritzes.

o2 sensors

Take back the one you bought and buy Bosch which have the connectors.Replace both of them. I paid something like $50 for the one and $65 for the other.
