Hi, I need some help and ideas, as I am getting close to losing it. I have spent a lot of time and nerves and still I cannot get the damn brakes to work properly.
We are talking about a 97 TJ, 2.5, rear drums with Dana 30/35 front/back.
Original symptoms:
1. when driving a lot in the city, start and stop driving, the front right caliper would seize up to the point the car would be impossible to drive. Leave it for 30mins to cool down and no problem. Not an issue when driving off road our outside of the city. The problem is it is intermittent and cannot reproduce it consistently. From time to time it acts up.
2. dash brake light would keep coming on, fixed by removing/recoupling of the electrical sensor connector. Now it is behaving normally. I know this works based on pressure difference, but there were no leaks so I do not think there was real pressure difference. Something was probably stuck in it and triggering the light.
3. High pitch noise when driving, noise would go out when pressing the brake pedal and come back again. Clear source, front brake pads not releasing properly.
Changed the brake hoses with braided steel ones, bled the air from the brake lines several times, checked the front calipers and they are sliding normally when cooled down, installed revision kit for the rear drums (w/o cylinder), about to install the revision kit for the front calipers (cylinder and all the bits). Sound from point 3 has now gone away.
However after installing the revision kit for the rear drum brakes, the rear left one is heating up really bad. I assumed it is not installed properly, but checked it today after driving around and the drum came right off easily and could not see anything wrong. The brake shoes were not pressed on the drum, although you could not touch the drum without gloves. When pressing the brake pedal the bits and pieces would slide around, the same when pulling the hand brake. Everything seems to be working, except it is heating up like crazy.
I am also considering changing the proportioning valve and the brake pump, however they are not cheap here in Europe so I would really need some help in figuring out what on earth is wrong with it. I am afraid that I am going to change them and still have the same issue. Not sure if the proportioning valve could be acting up, sending the brake fluid to the wheel, but not allowing it to "come back" when lifting off the pedal.
Any ideas are welcome as tbh I cannot find a logical reasons for all of these symptoms. The guys from the autoshop are also all out of ideas.
