Angry Sparrows... Not CV?

Vehicle: '03 TJ Sport

I've been experiencing symptoms which lead me to believe It's the CV on the front ds.. I greased it up, had it out, flexed it and all looked well. It did not squeak while driving with the ds out.. so I figured I'd order up a rebuild kit from spicer regardless..

So I throw the ds back in before I ordered the kit and I didn't hear any squeaking for about a week, then it started again.

I have a buddy at a local shop that specializes in Jeeps so I dropped it off.. They had it apart and said my CV had been recently rebuilt (I bought this Jeep last summer, so before that..) and it wasn't the source of the squeak.. But they couldn't pinpoint it... ha

Before I go ahead and just rebuild the the bugger regardless, does anyone have any suggestions what else it could be?

if the noise went away with the shaft out, its in the shaft. usually its the centering ball but it doesnt hurt to inspect each u joint while you have it apart

yes, forget to mention when I had it out I noticed the U joint closest to the front diff was pretty well mangled, so I replaced it. Guess it is the CV centering ball. Was just second guessing myself since the shop figured it wasn't the CV..

Could also be front axle u joints. They might have just enough extra load on them with the DS in (force required to turn DS and TC output shaft) that it doesn't make noise wtih the DS in.

I just got an 05 LJ rubi with ~80K miles. I just replace all the u joints and the only one that was really bad was the right front. It was so seized up, the u joint bearing cup made the hole in the axle stub slightly oval. I caught it just in time.

Hmm
Never even thought of that. That'll be the first thing I check tomorrow evening..
Should be fun given that we are on a severe snow storm watch here in Manitoba tonight and tomorrow.

Thanks,

I'll keep you posted.

Here's an update... Upon pulling the front ds yet again I have the same squeak.. Thoroughly checked the front axle u joints to see if the load of having the front ds in would cause them to squeak with the ds in, but not when it is removed, they look great though. I even brought the front ds to the best driveline shop in the city and they inspected the CV and concluded it is in perfect shape.
I'm at a loss.. Any more opinions on what this could be?

Does the sound change with RPM or speed? Worse in colder weather? Does it go away when its wet out? When was the last time the front axle shaft u-joints were replaced? What about the rears? The u-joints may not have any play, but may be no grease left in them causing noise.

Czer, the front ds CV looks to have been replaced fairly recently (I have only owned the jeep since June) this centering ball is not a greasable unit but seems to articulate nicely and feels lubed.. I cannot speak for the axle u joints though, they look decent and have no play but they are sealed and I do not know when they were replaced last.
I also forgot to mention, when the jeep is in my garage (heated) and I pull out, it doesn't squeak at all.. not even for the rest of the day. But when I leave it overnight in the cold it starts squeaking again the next morning.

Okay, well the front axle shaft u-joints don't rotate unless turning. If the sound doesn't change when turning or driving straight those aren't likely the culprit. Do you have a jack and axle stands so you can raise the vehicle up with the tires off the ground and listen for the noise? Has the rear shaft been looked at?

Yes I have had the jeep up on jack stands a couple of times in regards to this problem, I was able to replicate the noise the very first time I had it up. So I pulled the driveshaft, inspected it and drove the jeep around town squeak free without the ds. Also had a local shop look at the driveshaft, they deemed it was in great shape. Sure enough I put it back in and once again the squeaking began.

Sorry maybe I'm misunderstanding. Has the rear also been looked at or just the front?

The rear has been briefly looked at (confirmed there is no play) but I figured I could almost rule the rear out when I removed the front ds and discovered the squeak had quit.

Noted. When they inspected the front driveshaft was it disassembled to inspect the small shaft the CV ball sits on? It may move smoothly by hand, and have no visible play, but if its dry in there or has crushed needle bearings you may not know until under load. I would want to pull it apart and inspect. Last thing you want is it to seize and crack the transfer case as I've seen multiple times in the past.

The first shop I took the ds to said that they did take it apart, but the second shop (the driveline specific shop) simply looked at it.. neither one of them charged me since they figured the joint was good. I'm going to pickup a snipe and disassemble it asap I suppose, I can't see it being much else. Thanks for the help Czer.
