Another noise- need help identifing

Guys,

After I start up, there is a loud squealing under the hood. This happens when cranking and ac is on. If I immediately shut the ac off, it stops. Have not yet inspected the belt. The ac compressor is connected to the main belt isn't it? Would this mean the belt is going bad? Compressor? Please help.

Try starting it without the AC on, and see if it makes the noise. Yes the AC Compressor is on the main serpentine belt.

When I start it without the ac on, there is no noise. But then when I turn the ac on, the noise starts back. Several minutes after it's running, all noise goes away (even with ac on).

It seems if I rev the engine it helps get it to the point where the noise stops quicker. Just wondering if replacing the belt will fix it or if the compressor is causing the noise. Its seems likely that since cranking it without the ac on give me no noise, that it's the compressor. But does that mean its bad? Can it be lubricated?

Sounds to me like the compressor clutch, try some PB Blaster on the front surfaces without spraying the belt. I had a clutch go bad in my celica, the spray worked for a while. It may also be a tension problem. For some odd reason the AC on a jeep puts a huge strain on the engine, see if your tensioner has belt residue on it (also is the outside of your belt really shiny?).

Good feedback, thanks. I will do a visual on the belt when I get back home and try spraying some PB.

good luck, make sure you check the tensioner and belt first.

how many miles do you have on ur jeep? It might be time to change the belt while you are at it.

i'd try the belt first if it is relatively old, the compressor coming on could just be putting the strain on the engine, and making the belt squeak. definately inspect tensioner also. always start with the easy basics first.

My Jeep has 96k miles on it and the belt doesn't look all that bad. It is not frayed or cracked anywhere. It has got to be the compressor. Just like you guys said, a spray of the PB made it stop squealing. But what now? Does this mean I should start saving my money for a new ac compressor?

On my last car I had a problem with the compressor clutch, my mechanic added or removed (cant remember which) some spacers behind the clutch wheel to make it bite harder. It solved the problem at least long enough for my to sell it
