another starter question

i have a 98 tj that's having intermittent starting problems. i can replace the starter but am wondering do you have to replace the whole unit or is the solenoid replacable? i have a 4 cylinder. left my jumper cables at home and had to have two guys push start me at wally world. its been starting fine but sometimes i'll get in and nothing happens. i cleaned the cables really well today which usually helps but nothing happened. one of the guys that helped pushed tried to arc across with a screw driver but nothing happened.

When I had my starter off last year, I seem to recall its solenoid did not look to be replaceable separately. That it wouldn't spin even with a screwdriver across its terminals seems to confirm the problem is with the starter solenoid or starter itself.
