Auto Trans

Can anybody help 98 TJ auto trans I was driving along and my tranny started to make this loud noise. It was like when you stick a card in the spokes of your bike
the faster you drove the louder it got. Someone told me there is a tin shield between where the trans pan meets the body , and you can bend it out of the way.
What I dont understand is out of the way of what, Can I lower the skid plate and take it out without supporting the trans. Iam not driving it dont want to blow the trans. PS I did make it home and when I got on my street it quit making any noise at all and ran as good as usual Thanks for any help Tom

You need to support the transmission/t-case with a jack or something when you remove the skid plate.

Unfortunately the Jeeps use the skid plate as the cross member so you can't just drop it out of the way. They do make weld in cross member kits that you can add, but it's not that way from the factory.

Not supporting the trans can hurt the motor mounts so stick a jack stand under there! Good luck fixing the noise.

By the verbal description, I wouldn't say this is it but the first thing that came to my mind when I read your original post is that the starter bendix did not disengage from the flywheel and you were spinning the H E double hockey sticks out of the starter.
