Question Auto transmission problems ?

I would like to hear from experienced TJ owners regarding the reliability of the automatic transmissions. Are there any specific problems or model years that are troublesome ? What kind of mileage could one expect from a TJ that was driven normally? I would prefer to buy a manual for simplicity and lower cost of repairs/replacement, but at the same time I would take an automatic if a great deal would come my way. It seems most of the ones available for sale seem to be autos.

most expert wheelers here on the forum recommend Auto for offroading. I have a 5 speed and i can tell you its noisy and people say thats normal...

my auto is holding up. i average 14 in the city and 17 on the highway. mine is a 3 speed. with the 3speed if your on a extreme up hill angle the trans will stop working properlly. You gotta get a deeper pan and extend the intake tube in the trans pan. Ive been on some pretty good up hill angles and never had a problem. but i did get the deep pan kit anyways. i hear that the 3 speeds also tend to suck in water but i have yet to do that either.

I have been on some extreme up hill angles those angles where you are pracaticly sitting on your spare tire
I have never had a problem with the 3 speed auto

I do know that 03 and 04 had that problem the first years they put the overdrive trans in and you put the deeper sump pan on to cure it

heres the type of angles were talking about the auto is so much nicer when doing stuff like this
