Automatic to manual?

Has anyone change over their tranny from an automatic to a manual? I am interested in how it went and what problems you ran into.

Why in God's name would anyone want to do that? Usually it's the other way around. I can see changing over to an auto from a manual since autos are better for crawling, but why would you want to change an auto to a manual? On a side note, you wouldn't have any trouble selling your auto trans to someone who wants it.

i remember reading a similar thread about this a while back. i think the general consensus was it is actually harder and more labor intensive to do an auto to manual swap than vise versa. I found a thread on a swap someone did on an XJ with an AW4 to an AX15.

Having converted my TJ from a stick to an automatic to make it more capable of doing the 5 & 5+ rated trails I enjoy, I sure can't see going backwards to a stick. Autos are far better offroad & their torque converters can give you 2-3X greater low-end torque than a manual can.

The differences between this forum and the forums I used to post on for my Dodge Dakota cracks me up...here discussions are primarily lift, tire, wheel related as well as various other off-roading topics/equipment and yet we really aren't into engine mods aside from exhaust.

On the Dakota forums, it was less about off-roading (even the 4x4 Dakotas) and more about engine mods...both basic bolt-ons and more advanced stuff like roller rockers, cams, boring the cylinders out, etc. It was also very common for the Dakota owners to switch from an auto to a 5 speed and practically unheard of to switch from a 5 spd to an auto.

I'm not making fun of anyone or criticizing anyone... just stating an observation. Really interesting honestly.
