Automatic tranny shift issues

I have an 01 wrangler sport. It will not downshift unless I drop below ten mph. Also from time to time it will not shift out of first unless I push the pedal hard and I feel what feels like an unsticking of the pedal then it's fine. But the downshifting problem is always happening. Fluid is good and I am at a loss of what it could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Say youre driving on the interstate. some ass hole pulls out infront of you and you have to hit your brakes and slow down to 20MPH. Your transmission never downshifts out of 3rd gear?

Second, if you're at a red light and you're at a complete stop.. When the light turns green and you try to accelerate, your jeep stays in first gear unless you mash the pedal?

Your question about the down shift is correct. I have to drop down to under ten mph before getting on the interstate or it won't have the acceleration it needs to get going because it's like having a manual and not downshifting when u slow down.

Now to your second question you are correct except it doesn't do that all the time. When it does this I have to push the pedal like I'm racing almost and then it up shifts. It feels as if the pedal was stuck for a minute. I feel the pedal loosen up then it shifts correctly.

There is a cable that runs from the throttle down to the trans. It controls the trans shifting. Check for binding. Replace it if you have to. Sounds like that is your problem.

I'll get under it tomorrow and get back with you. Thanks for your help. I really didn't think about that cable.
