Automatic transmission shifts hard in reverse

Hi there,
I have a 98' with the 6 cyl and auto transmission that seems to have an issue when shifting into reverse. It shifts fairly hard and obviously bucks the jeep a little bit. If i let it sit for a few minutes, it seems OK but it does not sound like the engine is running any slower nor is the RPM gauge showing less RPMs. It's got about 120K miles on it and not sure how well it might have been serviced in the past.
It does feel like it's ideling a bit high as it picks up speed more than it should when in drive and simply release the brake.
Since you can't adjust anything on these things, anyone have any ideas of what to look at???

Thanks!

I'd check the adjustment on the transmission's kickdown cable where it is attached to the throttle bracket. If it's not set correctly, it can cause the transmission to shift or act unusual. The proper adjustment is when at idle, the kickdown cable should just barely be without any slack where it connects to the throttle lever. If it's too tight so it holds the rpms up any at all or if it's so loose that you have to give it too much gas to pull on that cable, it's too loose.

Thanks for the input. I will check that this weekend.

The fluids are all at proper levels and the color looks good. It's a new vehicle to me so I might do a flush soon anyway.
