AX-5 fluid change

I'm trying to change the fluid in what I believe to be an AX-5 on my 1999 2.5 L TJ. Anybody done this before? Have any pointers? Suggestions on the type of oil I should be using?

I'm doing mine soon and I'll be running Red Line MT-90 in my AX-5. It's supposed to be really good stuff.

Yes you have an ax-5, It's a pretty straight forward job. I just filled mine with Redline mt-90, and it smoothed things out really nice. Remove the fill plug at the top first, then the drain plug on the bottom to drain the old fluid. Replace the drain plug and pump new fluid into the fill hole until it spills out. Replace the fill plug, and pat yourself on the back for a job well done! Also I believe that the ax-5 has a 3.5 qt capacity, I just bought the 1 gallon jug.

The fill plug is on the passenger side correct? Next to the torx head bolt?

Yes, you are correct on the location. I bought it from summit racing. Another member has posted a 15% discount code here http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/summit-racing-discount-code-71856.html
I think any high performance auto store would carry it, or be able order it for you. Also their website has a retailer finder. Oh, and don't forget to buy the screw on pump top.

There are two good sources for Redline MT-90 which is a great choice for the AX-5 and AX-15, Summit Racing at Summit Racing as suggested above and Redline Oil at Red Line Synthetic Oil

Summit's price will be substantially cheaper than Redline's full MSRP price.

Or, simply use a good synthetic 10W-30 engine oil in your AX-5 which was approved for use in the AX-5 and AX-15 by Aisin, the transmission manufacturer, a few years ago. 10W-30 engine oil is about the same viscosity as the 75W-90 MT-90 gear lube since they are measured on two different viscosity sales.

Hey Jerry, so it is just as good to use a good synthetic 10W-30 engine oil in the AX-15? does it have the same benefits as the Red Line MT-90? tranny is getting a little old and want to help her out as much as possible. Thanks..

MT-90 is a good synthetic GL-4 75W-90 gear lube which is essentially pretty much what a good synthetic 10W-30 engine oil is. I'd run either though I have been a fan of MT-90 for many years... until Aisin came out saying a good quality synthetic 10W-30 works just as well.
