AX15 Trans Issues

99 TJ 4.0

About 20,000 miles ago it would grind going from 2nd to 3rd if I shifted too fast. I learned to slow it down. Eventually it's gotten to the point now where if I'm at a stop light and I don't shift into 1st before I come to a dead stop then it won't go in at all unless I really I mean really force it into gear. No grinding to speak of since I shift slow but if I need to get into reverse there is some serious grinding. From everything I know it sounds like the synchronizers are going/are bad. I just wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts on the situation or maybe experienced something similar.

If it is indeed the synchros is there a kit I can buy? If not what exactly do I need parts wise? Hub, sleeve springs etc?

Have you ever replaced the fluid in the trans?

Start there first. If it's still just as bad...sychros are gone. The AX-15 has thin brass sychros that are almost like paper. They are VERY picky on the fluid you use. Redline MT 90 or Redline MTL has proven to be a great fluid for the AX-15.

Here is a write up on trans fluid change for the AX-15....

I've seen an exploded view of the ax15 and my head was spinning. If you are a mechanic familiar with manual tranny's you could probably tackle it. The technical service manual for the '99 TJ has an extensive section on the ax15. From what you described I would start with checking simple stuff, clutch slave cylinder/fluid for starters. Good luck.

i'm by no means attempting to do ANY inside tranny work. I have a friend of a friend that knows his way around it but i need to take care of the small stuff. i'll be dropping the trans and taking it to him where he can work on it. He knows his stuff but is way busy hence the questions here. i need to provide the parts and learning willingness. the willingness and quest for knowledge i have in spades....the parts on the other hand is another story.

does anyone know of a good forum for strictly transmission issues? not that this site doesn't kick a$$ i just may be looking a little too deep.

as always than you soo much for the insight so far. this forum is an absolute treasure.
