Axle Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

Just a curious question. I had some time to kill while I was waiting for something to finish at work so I was browsing Stu Olson's write up's D-30 Axle Shaft Seal Replacement - 1

I had my axle shafts out over the weekend installing tube seals. and that got me thinking about the Axle shaft oil seals. On the site he says oil was dripping in the driveway. My question is, if an axle shaft seal was leaking wouldn't it just leak into the tube? I mean how do you know when a seal goes bad and starts leaking? Wouldn't it have to leak into the tube and come out the shaft at the driver or pass side? I have seals in there now so no oil would leak out of the end of the tube even if seal was leaking, how would you know to replace them or if there leaking?

The D30's housing is sealed inside, before the oil gets into the tubes themselves. You have to pull the differential out entirely to replace the two internal seals. When someone describes axle tubes leaking gear lube, I automatically think rear axle shafts because they have gear lube running down the tubes to the bearings & their seal is at the end of the axle shaft tubes, where the brakes bolt up.

Yea I understand that, the carrier and everything has to be pulled to change the D30 seals. But how would you know if those inner seals in the D30 were leaking? I have alloy usa tube seals at the end of my axle tubes where the breaks bolt up so if the inner seals were leaking you would never know it because the tubes are sealed at the ends on my D30. So how would I know if the inner seals needed to be replaced?

it's just a what if question, while I was putting in the tube seals it just occured to me how you would know if they needed replacement.

I wouldn't worry about it, the inner seals don't seem to be a common source of leaks. Not like the rear axle seals anyway.
