Axle Type

Newbie- I just purchased my first Jeep. Its a 2000 Wrangler Sport. I'm not sure what axles it has. I was thinking the front was a D35 and the rear was a D44, but the pictures of the diff cover didn't look right. I want to make sure before I buy upgrades for the vehicle. Thank you for the help in advance. Here are pictures

Front

Rear

A D30 is a very strong front axel. Gear ratio will be in the rear diff on a tag at about the 10 o'clock position. I cant see in the pic it its there or not. If it isnt, come back and ill tell you other ways.

33's are fine on the front D30, they're even ok on a D35, it's bigger than 33's that you start running into problems. There's a metal tag on the rear diff on the left side, you can see it in the pic. It's held on with the 8:00 and 10:00 bolts. Clean it off and look at the #'s embossed in it. They will be hard to read, but with enough light you can do it. The last 3#'s are the gears, they'll read 3 73 or 4 11 most likely.

I thought I read that the Dana 44's don't have the rubber seal. If that is the case I have a 44 as well

Just to make sure there's no confusion: D44's don't have a rubber PLUG. Has nothing to do with a rubber SEAL.
To make sure what you have compare pictures of the covers. They've appeared here on WF quite regularly.

What '03Rubi said. The front D30 (assuming you don't have a Rubi) has a metal plug. It's the rear axle most are concerned about. If your rear looks like merz's second pic then you have a D44.
