Ball Joint/ Axle U joints

i was told i should probably replace the ball joints and axle u joints on my 97 sport D30, I was wondering how hard these would be to do on my own, even with access to air tools etc
they quotes me above a thousand dollars so it would be nice to be able to do them on my own or with a few ppl

Axle U-joints are relatively easy to do on your own and also gives you better knowledge and feeling of accomplishment to do them as well. Rent a Ball Joint press for the local automotive store and for first time may take about 1-2hrs to do.

Ball Joints aren't as bad either, I did mine back in October, but they are definately time consuming. Theres plenty of write-ups for them on the net and if your mechanically inclined then should be able to.

I think I have a write-up for them at home so will check later and try posting if I do

If you doing them yourself do them over the weekend since you have to remove the axle shafts in order to do the Ball Joints. You also have to remove the knuckles as well.

Here's a couple links:
I used these two as a guide for replacing mine

Also as a note, don't bother using the Pickle Fork as well, it usually tears the rubber boots.
A good method I used was disconnect battery cables and with a BFH hit the knuckle to release on the joints. May take a few good hits... hahahaha Make sure to spray the night before with PB Blaster. - Truck Tech - Ball Joint Replacement - Dodge, Ram, 4x4, 4 wheel drive, 4wd, off road, off-road, wheeling, trails, DIY, trucks, Chevy, Ford, clubs, mud bog, rockcrawling, Toyota, Gallery, mud, rocks, readers rides, full-size, messag
