banging in front end

I have a dirt drive way and it is bumpy, while backing up in my 05 unlimited when the body roll a little I feel a banging in the front end. all ball joints and tierods feel ok, could is be my pan hard bar? it also does it while going forward. I even shook the car by hand and could not make it do it. it seems to only do it while moving. any help would be great. p.s. this is a stock jeep.

Has it only done it once? Your springs could of bounded up once and had that happen. IF you can get it to happen again a little more detail. IE does it happen when a tire dips in a hole and something is bound up on the left or right?

My '02 Sahara does the same thing and I know what it is. The upper end of my drivers side sway bar link has come loose. It fooled me for a while because at a glance it looks to be connected but when driving on uneven surfaces it bangs the sway bar. In the photo you can see the bubber boot hiding the culprit, if you raise the rubber you see that the ball has pulled out of the socket.

I'm glad you mentioned it, I keep forgetting to order a new pair of links. Quadratec had them for $20 each. I live near Houston and the Jeep is the perfect vehicle, sharp turns, easy to park and sometimes I have to climb a curb and make a road to avoid being stuck in traffic, curb climbing is what I think popped the ball out of the socket.

Yea more then likely check the swaybar links, especially the top end. That ball socket is known for coming apart. Also look to see if any scrap marks along frame near swaybar links so if it is hitting the frame you can slide the swaybar back to be centered.

Speaking of scrape marks, I noticed in the picture what looks like a tire rub on my sway bar, I have the factory size tires (the odd 9.5 X 30 I believe) and nothing is altered on the Jeep, must be when I'm climbing a curb and in a hard turn at the same time?

This post cost me $50, just ordered a new pair of sway bar links from Quadratec . Supposed to fit a '97-'06 TJ and Unlimited so timjod is covered, if that is his problem

Ok guys thanks for the help. as a matter of fact I did notice the play in the rubber boots on the sway bar but thought nothing of it, I'll have to give it a closer look when wife gets back.

Perhaps you have worn out control arm bushings and the CA moves a bit back and forth on the bolt?
