Battery life......

So my battery shot chunks tonight. It's the original battery, the Jeep is a 2005. I am running a winch and a couple of Hella 55w windshield lights, but never at the same time. How many years have you all gotten out of your original batteries? Or if you bought your Jeep used, how long have you had your current battery? I would think the original battery would be good for more than 3 years. It spent most of its life in the Mojave Desert in California, so it's not like it was ever frozen solid or anything. Anyways, I needed a battery something fierce so I replaced the original $hitter for a Duralast Gold. It's got 1000 cold cranking amps and a 3 year unconditional free replacement guarantee with an average lifespan of 8 years. Only paid $87 with the military discount from Autozone. I couldn't justify paying over twice that for an Optima when this Duralast comes with such a good warranty.

They must have put GOOD batteries in the 2000 models. Evidently, I got a junk one!! lol......I had mine tested, and the guy looked at me and said "What do you want us to put on the headstone?" Oh well. I haven't had any other problems with the Jeep, so if I only have to deal with something as small as a dead battery, I should consider myself lucky!! Of course, I bought the 100k extended bumper-to-bumper warranty.....so nothing else will go wrong with it until the warranty is up!!

I replaced my 98XJ's in 2002, the original battery was from 1997 when I bought it new. Replaced it with a redtop, it just went two weeks ago so I put another red top in. My 97TJ's both have red tops in them, replaced them at the same time as the XJ, 2002.

Yeah, I briefly considered the Optima. I know they're probably the best batts on the market, but like I said, I couldn't justify paying that much when the Duralast comes with such a good warranty. I know you get what you pay for, and if the Duralast gives me any problems, I'll probably replace it with a red top. (But not until that 3-year replacement offer is up)

I've had my TJ for almost 2 years.... the battery that came in it is still running strong. I believe it's an AC Delco, which is a stock brand but am unsure that it's the original one.

Cavey... with the Duralast battery, keep it for ~2 years, then run it dead. Take it to AutoZone and tell them you want your money back for a crappy battery. Turn around at another AutoZone and buy another with a new 3-year replacement.

When i got my rig i had the stock battery (unless someone replaced the original one with another stock one) .. its an 00.. it just died this winter to a point where i had it hooked up to jumper cables for a half an hr with no luck (no start).
The night before it was perfect, next mourning = 0

03, still original battery, lots of winching... even more in the winter(pulling fullsize trucks out of ditch and such can take hours to get done)
2 150watt kc's running every day (less than 8 hours of daylight in winter)
heater on full (usually topless or just a safari top until it gets well below freezing)
cold starts some mornings, -20 below is rough w/o a block heater.

when it goes ill probably get an interstate battery, or whoever make the stocker battery.
i avoid exide and optima like the plauge.

Heat destroys a battery faster than cold ever will.

In that case, all those months of 130* heat in the Mojave killed my battery prematurely.

Just remember that just because it has a decent waranty doesn't mean that there will be an autozone when it craps out 100's of miles from the nearest paved road. Better to pay more now for quality and cry once, than to cheap out and be sorry.

I would say statistically, I have more of a chance of breaking my D30/D35 diff combo than my new battery taking a crap on me.....so in theory I should replace both diffs with ProRock 60s. AND....my buddy just gave me a battery box. It's a rechargeable 12v battery box with cables for jumping your own battery without having to rely on having someone else there to jump you.
