BDS Lift Kit

I have a TJ 1997 and want to do a 3" lift. A friend recommended a BDS kit. I've looked at their website and they have a kit for $789 and then a body lift for $189. Forgive me I am learning... What is the difference here? Do I need both or just the 789 one? I want to order the right one. I have a mechanic friend who will install it for me. I have 31 tires and plan to upgrade to 33's eventually. Also does anyone have a bds? I won't be doing alot of off roading. Mainly street driving and some sand and a little mud. Thanks

That kit is incomplete no controlarms, brake line brackets and front trackbar bracket. This is the kit I used and it works great just don't use the steering arm! Jeep TJ Suspension Lift People bad mouth Rough Country but they have improved there products over the years.

I'm so confused...I'm a chic and not really educated on all the lifts, etc.. trying to teach myself. I'm not going to do major off roading, some every now and then. Maybe driving on the road. Do I really need a suspension lift? What the hell is the body lift? I just want it about 3" higher and run 32 or 33's . I have 31's now. I drive in the country and too the beach. Please help!

Just do a 1 inch body lift and a 2 inch bb boost or 1 inch BB and Rubicon springs. That would be my recomendation to start with. Others will pitch in with theirs.

Body Lift: Body Lifts are the least technical. (Not necessarily the easiest to install though) Body lifts consist of blocks that are placed between the frame and the body at the body mounts to raise the body up higher. They normally come in 1", 2", and 3" heights. In addition to the blocks they usually include some of the items that may need to be extended to install them. Things like clutch rod extension pieces etc. They normally do not include every potential part needed though. For instance they will not include longer fuel filler hoses, extended ebrake caable, or steering column extension parts which might be required. (Anything that connects between the body and frame may potentially need to be extended)

Body Lift:

* Pros:
o Allow larger tires (Provides greater clearance under the differentials)
o Installation is less technical
o Lower COG than a suspension lift.
o Additional drivetrain clearance from the body. (This can be important with the various drivetrain swaps many of us do)
o Allow many components (fuel tank, etc.) to be tucked up further above the frame.
* Cons:
o Higher COG than stock (Anytime the COG is raised the potential for a dangerous rollover is increased)
o More stress placed on the body mounts.
o Raising the radiator may cause cooling probems
o There will be an extra gap between the frame and body which many consider unnacceptable.
o Less breakover, approach, and departure angle gains (in comparison with a suspension lift)

Suspension Lift: A suspension lift entails lifting the frame and body higher above the axles by using longer suspension components (essentially the springs). These are more technical than the body lift because they have a greater impact on driveability. Once you raise the suspension it begins effecting driveline angles, steering geometry, and the way it rides. Because of this more thought needs to be given to these changes.

Suspension Lift:

* Pros:
o Allow larger tires (Provides greater clearance under the differentials)
o Better Approach and Departure angles (Raising the frame instead of the body in turn raises the bumpers further)
o Better Breakover angle
o Ability to custom tailor the ride to fit the specific use (For instance to get better articulation)
* Cons:
o Higher COG than the Body Lift (Your raising the entire frame, engine, tranny, transfer case, and body whereas with a body lft only the body is raised)
o More technical to install
o Can cause steering geometry and driveline issues that the body lift doesn't

if you are just looking for a taller jeep or bigger wheels these are the cheapest ways to do it. it all depends on what you are looking to do.
