Been smelling antifreeze...

Hi, all. I've been smelling antifreeze from my 1998 Wrangler. Not super strong but still there. Opened the hood to investigate and found the hose that goes from the thermostat to the heater core has a bulge in it where it attaches nearest the thermostat. This hose also looks like it might be split since there is a lump of mostly dry greenish gunk. I did notice that the heat this past winter was not nearly as strong as usual but I did have heat. Is it possible that a plugged up heater core could cause the hose to bulge like that or is it just age? Also, the other hose that attaches to the heater core looks fine but the metal tube that comes out of the hose on the engine side is flaky/rusty. I figure best course is to flush the heater core and replace both hoses. The pipes on the firewall that go to the heater core...does it matter which one gets the hose first? Top or bottom? The other question is can I use aftermarket or should I go to the Jeep stealer? If aftermarket is ok what is the best brand? Also, if the heater core is shot would it still be able to produce some heat? I was never cold this past winter but I wasn't sweating either so I'm hoping it just needs a flush. Sorry the post is so long. Thanks for any help you can offer. Cheers, John

First off welcome to the forum! Now as for flushing the heater core I have never heard of flushing one out mine always just started leaking and I replaced them! As for the hose if it is bulging is has broke down in side (I'm not sure it the is wire and thread bound so not sure) but needs to be changed! The flaky/rusty part could come from a slow leak over time, and needs to be replaced! And no it does not matter witch way they go (top or bottom)I'm not a expert but that is what I would do!
