Belt question

When the 98 tj starts is had a very quick and quiet squeak coming from the belt but once started it goes away. So I thought I'd use a little belt ease on it to help quiet it down but when I started it after the belt ease is has a quiet but noticeable squeak from the belt continuously. Could it be the belt ease is old? I used a spray bottle filled with water and sprayed it on to see if if it would go away. Well when water is on it it's quiet ( back to normal) but when the water is gone off the belt it comes back. Maybe some purple power degreaser to remove the rest of the belt ease? I'm lost on this subject so I need some help haha. Any info to help will be greatly appreciated.

age/appearance of belt-does it look like it could use to be replaced?
have you tried to adjust the tension?
my 98 would make a soft squeek when 1st started and louder if i had the 'defrost' on but once it warmed up it would go away. tried a shot of mobile1 on pullys(works great on trailer slide outs), bought new belt(twice-wrong one 1st time-take size/number to parts store, save a return trip), then went nuts trying to figure out the belt adjustor. tightened and no more noise and have new belt for when it (really) needs it.

The belt looks very good if not perfect. Maybe it is the tension for the noise when it starts. But the continuous squeak/ chirp it makes started after I put belt ease on it.

i'd say that has something to do with the spray-hopefully it wears off soon.
does it make more noise if you turn on heater/defrost on when 1st started and go away when you put heat on floor?? if yes-tighten belt.

Try rubbing a dry bar of soap on the belt and grate some on any pulleys you can easily reach. You won't need much.

Usually a squeaky belt is the sign of incorrect tension as it may be too loose or have some kind of lubricant on it.

I think the consistent squeak is a lubricant problem. Because i never had the problem until the "belt ease" spray I used (prob a very old can). The slight squeak when it starts I believe to be a tension problem.

Thanks for all the info!

Dry bar soap? Really? Never heard of it. Doesn't effect it in anyway?
