When I got my TJ it had six hex bolts and nuts fastening down the hardtop. I keep having to re tighten them and they keep getting loose and falling off. I've seen those 20$ hand screws that you can get online. Do those work good? Or any other suggestions?
First, make sure to always clamp the hard top to the windshield frame before tightening the rear bolts. That will insure the front edge of the hard top has a good weathertight seal against the windshield.
Just insert split-ring lock washers under the nuts to hold them tight. Or replace the nuts with nylock nuts that have a nylon insert in them that will keep them tight.
Once mine's on, I like to run a bead of Seal N Peel removable caulk where the top meets the windshield and the sides of the tub. I think it cuts down on wind noise. It comes right off in the Spring.
Small impact driver, Torx bit, and stock hard top bolts have worked for me. The stock rectangular nut is easiest to place, and catch, under the tub rail.
On/off in minutes. Never had one come loose.
A split spring lock washer or a nylon insert nut or a Dab of silicone sealer on the threads or some blue locktite will all keep them from vibrating loose
Cannot remember where i found this idea (its handy if you remove the hardtop now & again) but someone used 6 eyed bolts (might have to cut the thread down) & 2 washers on each & 6 wingnuts. an eyed bolt with washer is put thru the top of each hardtops holes & a washer & wingnut secure them from underneath, then with a tweak from a screwdriver thru the eye bolts to tighten up, you now also have a secure tie down point for some of the lighter luggage, maybe? :happyyes:
Yep I tried this idea, it's awesome! No tool install, quick & easy.
