A 4.0L from a Cherokee will not work. You need a clean slate design 4.0L which was installed in:

2000-2006 TJ
1999-2004 WJ

For the least hassle, I suggest sticking with something from a TJ. I'm sure others on this forum are more familiar with the harness and accessory ins and outs.

I blew my 4.0 in my 99. Got a motor from Titan engines, brand new shipped without core turn in was $1,900. Came with 3yr/36,000mi warranty. Runs great, 4,000 miles and no problems. If you have the money I would go that route. Also if you turn your core in you get $300 back.

I would agree, although i got the atk unlimited mile warranty, you cant go wrong with either of these engines. I have put 6000 miles on new engine and it is like night and day compared to my old engine, and i thought it was strong, wow i was wrong, good luck and btw the swap is pretty easy. oh and btw mine was an 02 also with only 117.000 miles on it , damn po.

There are several good re-builders out there, I am a fan of Jasper.

You might also consider s used engine, I think the site recommended here is Car_parts.com?

You go to the site pull down the vehicle and needs, and you get a great list of every junk yard with year, mileage, etc

I bought it from PO and I don't think it was maintained right. I was mudding and lost oil pressure then it started knocking. I didn't even bother troubleshooting it, just replaced it.

I had a piston skirt drop into the oil pan, sounded like a deisel engine. I got a new long block from O'reilly's for $1500 delivered, just had to use all my bolt on parts, but with all new internals. 3yr. unlimited milage.

Not bad. I haven't heard any good or bad about O'reilly's motors. How does it run?

You might also look on craigslist. In my area (Portland, Or Craigslist) There are usually fairly low mileage complete TJ engines from $600 to $1000, but we also have 3 Jeep salvage companys fairly close that are selling on craigslist.

Same thing happened to my 2002 - PO didn't maintain good - sounds like a diesel now.

I'm going Golen - haven't decided of just the 4.6 or the boosted long block.

I would rather spend the extra money and get an engine that i know is brand new. You never know what the PO did to it or why they are selling it. For me, buying it newbie I had the satisfaction of knowing that whatever happens or doesn't happen to the engine is a reflection of my own maintenance. Now if you can't afford to spend the extra money then that is understandable but I deff think it's worth the extra money.

Previous owner didn't take care of mine here. Cleaned out the valve cover There was sludge everywhere. It was terrible. After doing everything I could to maintain The engine I'm running really good i think..Have a little bit of a knock when it starts in the morning but after it warms up Its fine. Oil pressure sits right around 20 now vice 40 at idle. Going to be buying the golen stroker engine here soon.
