Bought 2001 Jeep Wrangler on eBay from Florida dealer. Looks like I've been f...ed

Hi guys,

I'm new here to the jeep forum. Also I am a new to Jeeps - my first one ever. And looks like I've been raped by the dealer.

Here is my story. I was looking for a Jeep Wrangler for my daughter. Found one (very decent photos) on eBay here - Jeep Wrangler Sport 60th Anniversary | eBay

Description says that it's in perfect condition. As you can see from photos it looks decent. So I ended up winning it. Paid to the dealer within 2 days and after 1 month it was delivered to me.

I'm not going to give you a lot of text to read. Just look at the photos I took. Dealer did not disclose all these issues in eBay listing.

More photos and videos. https://drive.google.com/?authuser=1...GIxWVVTUUFFUkE

My question is:

1. What is repairs going to cost (approx)? (replacing or fixing frame, etc)

Or should I request a full refund and return car to dealer. Because as of now I feel like I'm stuck with junk car and out of almost $11K.

BTW this car was donated to Vietnam Veterans of America organization and then was sold to this dealer who sold it to me as "perfect vehicle".

Please share your thoughts.

Update:

Floor under the carpet is rusted.
Muffler is leaking
Gas tank cover rusted with a lot of holes.

Basically all undercarriage is f..ed up.

Contact EBay and file a claim, ASAP! Also contact Seller asap. Hopefully you haven't left feedback yet. All communication with seller should be done through eBay only.

I did. They said that if the car is older then 10 years, I am out of luck.

My daughter made a trip to Florida to buy a car she just had to have. Turns out it had frame damage, couldn't be aligned (would have cost thousands to fix) ac issues and a few other things. Anyway she never did get any help from the dealer that misrepresented the car. Anyway she contacted Florida Dept of Motor Vehicles and they were a tremendous help. She had to get estimates for everything and gave that to Motor Vehicle (don't remember exactly what department but call them). It took a few months but basically what happened is Motor Vehicle told them if they did not reimburse her for repairs they would revoke their dealer's license. She received a check for over three thousand dollars. They did not ask the dealer to reimburse all the money for a refund though, that was what she wanted as well. But she was able to fix the car.

I don't see where it says perfect, i see "great shape" which can mean ok, but also 6-10 photos in the ebay listing shows the cross member hanging down under the jeep.
Obviously the dealer did not look it over himself or rather intentionally over looked it, but the problem was clearly visible in photos.

How did you pay? Might be able to get help if a bank card or paypal was used.

Did you ask him questions thru ebay about rust? or anything being broken? If yes, then maybe contact the Better business bureau in that area or maybe the dealer association he might be with.

Ebay sets up 3rd party inspections to help look it over, costs, but saves headaches like this for long distance buyers.

Thanks for advise. I did open claim with internet crime department (Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) | Home).
Hopefully they will be able to help. I will also contact Florida DMV for help. Dealer refuses calls (does not pick up phone nore returns calls).

10 days from purchase date or 10 days from I actually touched the car. I won auction on April 19th but actually got to drive the car 2 days ago (took DAS auto shippers over 1 month to deliver car to CA from Florida).

I paid with Wells Fargo direct transfer (they use WF too) so it was easy to do. They got $10K within few minutes.

So you had an account with WF? or how did WF get the money to transfer? Card or you normal bank account?

Well was trying to look around WF website, but i only find protection from someone fraudulently using your account, but nothing about buyer protection.

Sorry you got scammed. Talking about going from a high from winning to a complete low. Buying used with no warranty probably will end up with no recourse in your case, especially it's over 30 days after you paid. It looks like that Jeep began the majority of its life up north and ended up in florida due to that much undercarriage rust. Find a local shop that deals with Jeeps and have them thoroughly check out the extent to the rust. Hopefully it hasn't spread to the tub. This pic looks like they deceivingly painted the visible area of the frame black to cover the rust.(You should also have the shop check out the front suspension. Looks to have some worn bushings)

I have WF checking and they have WF checking too. So what I did is with help of bank staff I transferred money directly to their account. Actually first they cut a cashiers check out of my money, then deposited it and transferred to their WF account.

I will contact WF too to check if they can help me out.

I lifted carpet (under the driver and passenger seats) and there is rust all over the place. Muffler is leaking too in multiple places. Basically looks like the whole under carriage of the car is f...ed up.

Wow...10k and its not even drivable. I sure hope you get your money back. You are probably looking at an easy 5k+ to get all the rust fixed assuming the body and drivetrain is ok. That skid plate supports your transmission and transfer case and it is literally hanging off the Jeep. Its not like there is just some some hidden rust or something... the rust is so bad you can't even move the jeep.

I had the same happen to me with a VW Jetta TDI. Pictures looked immaculate, drove 200+ miles to pick it up and it looked like Freddy Krueger was the previous owner. They armor-alled the crap out of the leather and took some nice/shiny pictures of it. Fortunately, we hadn't paid yet and refused the vehicle (ebay feedback be damned!). I think we did reimburse them for their ebay fees and they agreed not to leave negative feedback. Sorry you got a lemon with that much distance between you and the "stealer". I hope it works out for you.

Why would you buy an east coast rig when you have an endless supply of rust free California jeeps?

I would just put that thing on craigslist and sell as-is and start over with something decent. Take your loss and move on.

Now with a little work it can be patched using a $150 part Auto Rust Technicians ART-113-R - Autorust Passenger Side Center Skid Plate Mount Section for 97-03 JeepĀ® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec with some assistance from a body shop or if they know someone with welding skills. Probable best to look at both sides in case other is shot also.

I think your best bet is find a local Jeep club and get some sound advice and maybe meet members with weld skills that can help you out and do a frame swap for you cheap. Check out places online like D A V E Y S J E E P S . C O M - Specializing in Jeeps & Jeep Parts that sells complete frames for around $300 but not sure they will ship. As for the tub bottom, it will eventually need to be sanded down to see the extent of needed repair. Unfortunately for your safety, I would park it until you contact eBay or the dealer to hopefully get your money back or the very least, have a knowledgeable Jeep guy thoroughly inspect it for you.You probably won't get even 1/2 of what you paid into it by selling it. I would have to disclose the rust to a buyer because it's the right thing to do. I wouldn't want anyone driving a Jeep with a compromised rusted frame causing an accident. Hope it works out and keep us posted. Maybe you should post the info of the dealer here on WF. A group of WF members in the area can stop by to give the dealer a personalized 'Jeep wave'.

I'm trying to work things out now with dealer. If it does not work out I'm going to post name and address. But I still have hope that it'll work out.
I opened claim with internet fraud agency and will contact Florida DMV on Monday.

Somehow I sense this is one shady dealer. The original PO knew the cost to repair the rust so he/she donated the vehicle for probably a tax writeoff. The dealer got this cheap from the VVA knowing about the issues and tried to flip this Jeep for one heck of profit. I'm hope I'm wrong and you get your money back.

Florida is not really rust prone. There are tons of really clean south and east Jeeps. Arizona and California are rust free for sure but even more sun burned. In any case, people, please do not send money (Ebait Craigs List etc.) without a personal inspection or have an agent you trust to inspect for you. There are also tons of junk vehicles out there.

Definitely also file a claim with the Better Business Bureau. Remember to file a claim (don't just write a review). You'd be surprised how often they are able to at least offer you some resolution. If you used a credit card, contact the credit card company. If you did a bank to bank money transfer with WF, contact Wells Fargo. Since they represent both you and the seller, there's a chance that they will take up the issue with the seller.

The bank or credit card company does not want to have been involved in a fraudulent transaction and ideally the seller will not want the better business bureau and/or the financial institution hounding them. Whatever you do, be persistent. It may take weeks or more, but if you keep pushing you stand a much better chance to get what you want. Good luck.
