Brake problems

Tonight while driving home, the "brake" light on my dashboard came on, and started making a beeping sound. Instantly my brakes felt completely different, and did almost nothing when I pushed down. This all happened in a split second. I made my way to an auto-zone and got some brake fluid, hoping this would help, but it didn't. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem(s) and how much it would cost to repair them?

I would start by checking for an obvious leak along the system from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders and all points between. Were you on the brakes when this event occured? Check if all the brakepads and shoes are worn down and make sure the components are in place. Just some places to check out. Good luck.

How can anyone estimate what the cost to repair is when no one knows whats broken? Look behind each wheel and look for wet spots. They will at least get you a starting point. If none are wet crawl under and look at all the brake lines.

Then report back.
